  • Cultivate positive energy in your work. As a leader, your emotions have a contagion effect. Make sure they are the ones you want others to adopt.
      
  • When you are experiencing negative emotions try to recognize that "right now" is a good time to do administrative work or limit the amount of contact you have with others. This is a great way to "self-manage." 

     

  • Give yourself some "white space" in your calendar. Nothing drains productivity like over scheduling. You need time to process emails, follow up on commitments, and review progress.

Emotional connections drive productivity

 

I recently completed an engagement with a technology company, where my focus was developing leadership skills as a means to improve collaboration, and drive greater productivity. It struck me, as I was working with the leadership team, comprised of members from marketing, sales, operations, finance, and customer service, that the best companies recognize that creating a culture where everyone goes the "extra mile," is a competitive advantage. In most studies that I've reviewed, there is a clear correlation with highly engaged workforces and productivity, innovation, revenue, and even earnings per share. If you want to drive those kinds of results, then it starts and ends with leadership. When you think of a time when you were highly engaged in your work, odds are that you had a connection to a very good leader. Many claim that the opposite was also true if you have ever felt disengaged in your work. To create a culture of high performance and engagement, start with your own leadership skills and sharpen them. One way you can develop the leadership skills that foster employee engagement, is by making an emotional connection with those you lead.   • Play music at times in your office. Even softly. See what makes you more productive from Mozart to Pop. Of course, there are times you may prefer silence. Experiment.
