Stay healthy this winter!

It's Respiratory Illness Season, and hospitalizations from COVID-19 and/or flu cases are now rising in Illinois. Getting the updated 2025-2026 COVID-19 and flu vaccine is the easiest and most effective way to help keep you and your family healthy before, during, and after the holidays. While it may seem like a small thing, these vaccines can have a big impact. To learn more about important vaccinations, call the Healthy CPS Hotline at (773) 553-KIDS (5437) or visit cps.edu/vaccines.

Message From Dr. Valentine

Hello, Edison community!

Happy December!

Please see the newsletter below for helpful announcements and updates. Here are a few that I'd like to spotlight:

  • Thrivers Book Talk: The book talk scheduled for 11/20 has been moved to 2/11 due to an unforseen scheduling conflict. Apologies if this presents an inconvenience for anyone!

  • Giftedness Workshop: The virtual parent workshop scheduled for 12/3 has been moved to 12/11. The workshop will be recorded and shared in a future community newsletter.

  • CircEsteem Workshop: The CircEsteem event planned by Youth Guidance will be rescheduled to February due to CircEsteem staffing issues. We hope you can make it!

  • Inclement Weather: Even with the arrival of cold weather, we will try to have outdoor recess as much as possible. The fresh air, the chance to run, and the time to practice social skills in an unstructured setting are an important part of each student's day. To help us make the most of it, please check the weather each morning and ensure your child is dressed appropriately to stay warm and comfortable. We will only stay indoors if the 'feels like' temperature is below 20 degrees, if it's raining outside, or if conditions are unsafe for outside play.

  • OSP Training: The safety of our students continues to be of the utmost importance. The District’s Office of Student Protection and Title IX’s commitment to this endeavor includes providing training on preventing and reporting abuse to all Pre-K-12 CPS students. Lessons will take place between December 8th and December 19th. Parents have the right to opt-out of the Office of Student Protections and Title IX Student Training. If you choose to opt your child out please email your child's homeroom teacher ASAP. If you wish to teach your child this material yourself, you can access the videos to the sessions on the OSP website at www.cps.edu/osp. Student Training covers the following five learning objectives using developmentally appropriate language in sessions that have been broken down by grade and are all around 30-45 minutes:

  1. Students will understand CPS Title IX Policy and Discrimination Statement
  2. Students will know who the Title IX Coordinator is, what OSP does, and how to get in touch with OSP
  3. Students will understand what constitutes sexual harassment and bias-based harm
  4. Students will be aware of the resources available to students who report sexual harassment, retaliation, or bias-based harm, including supportive measures pending an investigation
  5. Students will know what to do if they believe they or other students have been subjected to sexual harassment or bias-based harm

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

In partnership,

Karen Valentine, EdD
