Play with an Attitude
What happens when fairy tales from our childhood come together in one story? Theater students from Weston Ranch High perform as characters who go on a quest with audience interaction.
Coding with C o l o r
Walter Woodward First and Second Grade students created stylish necklaces for themselves while learning to code from their expert “teachers”, Ms. Meyers’ Careers with Children high school students from Lathrop High School.

Second grade teacher, Ms. Micheletos of Woodward Elementary School, initiated the program collaboration seven years ago, explained Ms. Overbeck. Ms. Overbeck’s class recently enjoyed this same experience at Lathrop High School.

“The purpose is to expose our students to STEM and STEAM in an interactive and colorful way.”

Inside a computer, everything is numbers, specifically binary numbers. Students learned that computers do not understand letters, pictures, color, sound, or videos and that software imposes human interpretations of the data.

Students selected a word they were familiar with such as their name, or mom or dad. They learned how to spell out that word in binary language using colorful beads. Each letter in the word is represented in a colored bead pattern which would translate into numbers when coding.

Students are learning key elements of digital literacy in an innovative and interactive way. Digital literacy does not replace traditional forms of literacy, instead building upon the skills that form the foundation of traditional forms of literacy.
Flying with SOFIA
In October, teacher Megan Smith from Lathrop High School took her turn to fly with the NASA SOFIA Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors program. A program that only 14 school districts in the country are invited to participate in.

Smith took her flight experience to a George McParland third grade class studying mystery science lessons in space, and told stories of infrared astronomy over astronaut ice cream. Students had a BLAST!
WRHS JROTC Take Home Gold
On January 25, 2020, the Weston Ranch High School cadets of the JROTC Cougar Battalion won the overall armed drill championship at the All-Services Armed Drill Competition in northern California.

Sixteen units of the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) representing schools from San Francisco and Vallejo to the Central Valley competed in color guard and squad/platoon events. These units represented four of the seven branches of the United States Uniformed Services, Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines.

Congratulations to Jordy Esqueda and his armed squad for winning 1st place in addition to the individual drill down, Ventura Hernandez and his platoon for winning 1st place, Holley Crawford and her unarmed platoon for placing 2nd, and Bryant Orozco and his color guard team placing 3rd. Way to go Cougar cadets!
CTE Grant Funds Culinary Class Countertops
Family and Consumer Science culinary arts students at Weston Ranch High School arrived back from winter break to a kitchen classroom with new stainless steel countertops and backsplash. A CTE, or career technical education, grant was awarded to Manteca Unified to fund the modernization project.

Thank you to our Facilities and Operations Department for managing and moving swiftly with the project timeline ensuring no impact to the school day.
Students Take on Projects to Serve Community
Although Senior Projects are no longer a high school graduation requirement, a handful of Manteca High students volunteered to help in their community by creating service oriented projects.
