Salinas Christmas Project

For the past two years the Salinas Ladies Coffee/Cocktail Klatch has helped sponsor a children's group at Christmas time including the orphanage in Olon and Buena Fuente, a school in a very poor district on the Santa Elena peninsula. 'Papa Noel' puts in an appearance and hands out gifts. The looks on the faces of the children are priceless and the tears in the eyes of people who attend tell of the joy of giving. Expats and Ecuadorians alike have very generously donated their time, presents, money, food and gift wrapping expertise each year.
We continue the tradition this year, with a public grade school located in a very poor section of the Muey neighborhood here in Salinas. The name of the school...Click here for the full article.

....Now the best part of the Klatches- aside from solving all the world's problems, the fun chats and the sharing of useful information (names & location of seamstresses, where best to buy what, new restaurants etc.) and introducing new members to our existing community- is that we help and organize charitable activities.

UPDATE Expiry Dates on Meds and Pharmaceuticals - What do They Mean to You?

Source: Richard Altschuler, 2002: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/460159

Editor's Note: WE RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING COMMENT POST-PUBLICATION LAST WEEK, AND SEND IT ALONG, AS THE POINTS ARE VERY VALID:
As a U.S. Medical Practitioner living in Salinas, I feel it is important to point out some critical omissions in the article on expired drugs. While many drugs are effective long after their expiration date (though medical professionals cannot use or recommend them for liability reasons) there are some very important exceptions. While some Aspirin might be ok after expiration, if the bottle smells vinegary, it has gone bad.  Also and more importantly, Nitroglycerin tablets have gone bad if they don't give you a headache.
Drug lifespan depends greatly on proper storage (away from heat, sunlight). If a medicine is crucial to your health I suggest you use them up close to the expiration date.  Here is an important part of the article posted from MedScape, that was previously omitted:

"a former FDA expiration-date compliance chief, said that with a handful of exceptions -- notably nitroglycerin, insulin, and some liquid antibiotics -- most drugs are probably as durable as those the agency has tested for the military. "Most drugs degrade very slowly," he said. "In all likelihood, you can take a product you have at home and keep it for many years, especially if it's in the refrigerator."
Beautiful Beach? One to suit everyone in Santa Elena, Guayas.

Santa Elena is located between the provinces of Guayas and Manabi, in western Ecuador. Tourism and its beaches are important here for the development of its binomial economy. The landscape and the characteristics of each of the beaches change-even in the same region-along its vast coastline, offering opportunities for everyone: here you can practice all water sports, relax and sunbathe on the seashore, stay in the best hotels, as well as camping and campfires on the shores of the sea in lonely places.
