Foundational Practice Growth Insights™ established a CORE Guiding Principle as Health Literacy, which the World Health Organization defines as: | | “Cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health. By improving people’s access to health information and their capacity to use it effectively, health literacy is critical to empowerment.”
One attraction of patient centrism is that, like the Hippocratic Oath from 400 BC, it’s always in style.
While the Hippocratic Oath professes “above all do no harm,” suboptimal QALY (Quality-Adjusted Life Years) outcomes may result when patients and their loved ones lack access to or understanding of research-based information upon which medical decisions should be made. With hearing-related comorbidity education, you are the Subject Matter Expert. That’s the Point.
See the Health Literacy Standard of Care as a reputable guide for those you serve to, of their own volition, practically interpret and apply pertinent aspects of the…
| | |
As dedicated Practice Growth Partners, we strongly support you in doing so by delivering the 3 Cs:
-
Concepts, such as our current focus on Educate Well Monthly program.
-
Content, featuring our influential Did You Know? comorbidity collection, and most importantly…
-
Coaching, which is where valuable experience is shared about how to best Use the Tools.
In pursuit of winning ways, Jim Collins, the brilliant author of books such as Good to Great and Built to Last, describes aspirational Flywheel Effects whereby:
| | |
“Big things happen because you do a bunch of little things
supremely well that compound over time.”
– Jim Collins
| | Knowing team efforts are essential to constructive coaching, our Educate Well Monthly Team Meetings accelerate Flywheel Effects from Using the Tools. Here’s how the “little things” work. | | |
👥 Participants: Ideally, ALL Team Members. Why? Because patients on journeys to well-informed decisions interact with clinicians AND other colleagues. Every caring conversation matters.
🎯 Intention: Getting Well Aligned on the upcoming month’s Did You Know? topic, such as:
- October is Depression, a psychosocial topic extolling Happy to Hear benefits.
- November is Diabetes, a systemic topic closely related to hearing loss incidence rates.
- December is Tinnitus, a complex topic in which optimum hearing contributes to effective treatment plans.
🔁 Frequency: Once per month x 12 months.
🗓️ Timing: Ideally, the last week of preceding month.
⏰ Duration: 30-60 minutes.
📋 Structure:
| | |
Part 1: Review Prior Month
While recognizing clinicians take the lead, encouraging each Team Member to actively participate is wise. In fact, enlightened Practices seize the opportunity for all involved to demonstrate professional growth. Specifically, dialogue centers on:
| | ➡️ Substantive progress in Did You Know? topic familiarity. For example, September’s Risk of Falls. | | | ➡️ How caring conversations have transpired in recent weeks. From constructive challenges encountered to potentially life-changing breakthroughs, teachable moments spark group dialogue on fine-tuning counseling techniques. | | | ➡️ Success Stories being exemplars of how patients and/or their loved ones engaged with educational content. By doing so, improving their health literacy on pertinent topics and gaining access to, understanding and using information in ways that promote and maintain good health. | | | |
Part 2: Discuss Current Month
While next week’s volume will further articulate the breadth and depth of each Educate Well Monthly collection, we begin with this Teachable Trio:
| | To briefly describe each: | | |
Pearls of Wisdom: Our proprietary research synopsis with the structured discipline of a research paper:
- Introduction and Public Health Importance
- Key Research Statistics
- Key Research Results and Discussion
- Practical and Clinical Applications
- Research References
| | | Educational Handout with Did You Know? content on the front and intuitively paired back. | | | Let’s Talk: An In Practice reference on In Practice conversations In Your Own Words, and In Community Reference on Physician Referral targeting. | | | See you next week as our Educate Well Monthly Team Meeting primer further discusses Part 3: Q&A, an essential element of getting “the little things” right. | | | | |
