1/27: International Holocaust Remembrance Day

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held each year as a way to remember the killing of 6 million Jews and millions of others during World War II.

Holocaust survivor Reva Kibort tells the story of when German soldiers came to Warsaw, Poland, in this teacher-created lesson plan on PBS LearningMedia.

1/28: Anniversary of the Challenger Disaster

Idahoan Barbara Morgan was the backup Educator Astronaut to Christa McAuliffe, who died along with 6 other crew members aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger when it exploded after launch January 28, 1986.

1/29: Anniversary of Idaho's Bear River Massacre

January 29 marks 159 years since the Bear River Massacre in what is now Idaho. Teacher-created lesson plans accompany "Remembering Bear River," produced by Idaho filmmaker Phillip Schoen.

1/31: Apollo 14 and Idaho

Some of America’s best-known astronauts visited Idaho in 1969 to train for the Apollo 14 moon mission, which launched January 31, 1971. Idaho Experience episode includes teacher-created lesson plans.

Engineering Design in Gooding

Kindergarten through 5th-grade students in Gooding's 21CCLC school used the scientific method and the engineering design process to learn why objects sink or float, and to build their own boats.

We started off the day together by making predictions and testing objects in tubs of water. Using those observations, we examined what is and is not a boat. For example, we decided boats float but that doesn't necessarily mean everything that floats is a boat!

We put our ideas to the test, designing and building a boat that would float while carrying small, plastic animals. Many students were eager to improve on their designs at home.
