Did you know that your donations support local school repair projects?
The Mexican government builds schools, but they don’t clean or maintain them, leaving these tasks to the parents. Our schools suffer greatly from their age and from the climate, as the heat and humidity eat away at them. The biggest problems are air conditioners, rusting and corroding electrical systems, as well as metal doors, windows, and their hinges. Those of you who own property locally know that it is a constant battle with the elements to keep equipment functioning.
With eight teachers and about 180 Primaria students and another five teachers and about 90 Telesecondaria (middle school) students using seven toilet stalls in total, there is a lot of strain on these limited facilities.
The Troncones Kinder, thanks to the effort of Las Hermanas, local resident Tazio Pintado, and officials in La Union, received several new toilet stalls in a new bathroom facility as part of a major renovation a few years ago. The Majahua Primaria bathroom received renovations of two bathroom stalls funded by Las Hermanas donors last year.
Some of our board members visited two Troncones schools this spring, and determined that a new hydro-pneumatic pump would improve the water supply to the bathrooms and general handwashing station at the Primaria and, if successful, at the Telesecondaria.
We are extremely fortunate that the Padres de Familia, or parent group, of both schools are led this year by Don Pedro at the Primaria and Don Rodolfo at the Telesecondaria. Both are skilled and knowledgeable workers, willing to work and learn the duties of maintaining the schools. Partnering with them, Las Hermanas has purchased the new pump for the Troncones Primaria, while the Padres de Familia purchased a timer system and check valve for the hydro-pneumatic pump to fill the two tinacos that service the four bathroom stalls and the main hand-washing sink for the children. The latest addition to the system was the installation of new water lines delivering water from the cistern to the bathroom tinacos and from the tinacos to the hand sink. This last phase of the project was completed by Don Pedro and Don Rodolfo late May.
We are pleased to be able to work closely with the parents of our community to support them when they need it by covering expenses like this. The students deserve a clean, safe space in which to learn, as they grow into the future leaders of our community.
