Six students have applied for a scholarship through Las Hermanas, so that they can attend or continue attending college this fall, and we would love for them all to be able to continue their education..

Please help them achieve her goals by donating to our College Scholarship Fund. This fund is completely separate from funds collected during the year for our transportation and after-school programs.

There are many donation options to choose from. Click here to donate now so we can plan for the fall. Prefer to donate by check? Make it payable to Friends of Las Hermanas, and mail it care of:

May Student of the Month

Dante Joshua Magallan Patiño is nine years old and is in fourth grade at the primary school in Troncones. He is a student who has stood out for his dedication and commitment to education. From the beginning, he began attending activities at the Las Hermanas Learning Center. He would like to master English because he wants to teach it to his mother, who works with foreigners.

His favorite hobby is painting, and he loves to draw. At his young age, he realizes the many injustices that exist in our country, which is why he wants to become a great lawyer (with a law degree) when he grows up.

Dante is a tender and loving child with his classmates and other people in the community. He is very attentive in class, never holds back on any subject, and always wants to learn more every day.

For this reason, Dante is the Student of the Month for May 2025.

Congratulations, Dante!

Local Students Win Big

The Sixth Grade Children’s Knowledge Olympiad is being held, and students from our Troncones Primaria Vincente Guerrero finished in first and second place in the second round of the competition ! This is an impressive achievement for our students, who were competing against participants from the municipalities of Coahuayutla, La Union, and Zihuatenejo. Congratulations to the students, their parents, and their teachers.

The two winning students are José Alfonso Rosas Salas and Iker Isaí Rendon Medina. José’s parents are Griselda Salas Lopez and Alfonso Rosas Pascacion. Iker’s parents are Esveidi Medina Oregon and Boris Rendon Rodriguez. Their teacher is J. Santos Jaimes Sánchez.

Now, the students move on to represent their school at the state level of Guerrero, as they travel to Acapulco to compete at the event to be held on June 11. Las Hermanas received a request from the group to help with transportation costs, and we were thrilled to say yes. This is another way that your donations are making a difference in the lives of our students and their families. Thanks to every one of you for your dues and donations!

If you are in town and would like to help with their transportation and lodging, contact teacher Benjamin Maldonado.

School Repairs and Renovations

Did you know that your donations support local school repair projects?

The Mexican government builds schools, but they don’t clean or maintain them, leaving these tasks to the parents. Our schools suffer greatly from their age and from the climate, as the heat and humidity eat away at them. The biggest problems are air conditioners, rusting and corroding electrical systems, as well as metal doors, windows, and their hinges. Those of you who own property locally know that it is a constant battle with the elements to keep equipment functioning.

With eight teachers and about 180 Primaria students and another five teachers and about 90 Telesecondaria (middle school) students using seven toilet stalls in total, there is a lot of strain on these limited facilities.

The Troncones Kinder, thanks to the effort of Las Hermanas, local resident Tazio Pintado, and officials in La Union, received several new toilet stalls in a new bathroom facility as part of a major renovation a few years ago. The Majahua Primaria bathroom received renovations of two bathroom stalls funded by Las Hermanas donors last year.

Some of our board members visited two Troncones schools this spring, and determined that a new hydro-pneumatic pump would improve the water supply to the bathrooms and general handwashing station at the Primaria and, if successful, at the Telesecondaria.

We are extremely fortunate that the Padres de Familia, or parent group, of both schools are led this year by Don Pedro at the Primaria and Don Rodolfo at the Telesecondaria. Both are skilled and knowledgeable workers, willing to work and learn the duties of maintaining the schools. Partnering with them, Las Hermanas has purchased the new pump for the Troncones Primaria, while the Padres de Familia purchased a timer system and check valve for the hydro-pneumatic pump to fill the two tinacos that service the four bathroom stalls and the main hand-washing sink for the children. The latest addition to the system was the installation of new water lines delivering water from the cistern to the bathroom tinacos and from the tinacos to the hand sink. This last phase of the project was completed by Don Pedro and Don Rodolfo late May.

We are pleased to be able to work closely with the parents of our community to support them when they need it by covering expenses like this. The students deserve a clean, safe space in which to learn, as they grow into the future leaders of our community.

To help support these necessary purchases. please Donate!
