[ S.C. Sea Grant Consortium - May 15, 2020 ]
Dear South Carolina Educators,
That amazing time of year is finally here again. The time when we start to see bright sea turtle nest markers along our beaches is upon us! Last year was a record-breaking year for sea turtles in South Carolina, and we can't wait to see what this nesting season will bring. Starting in May, females of South Carolina's four native species of sea turtles – loggerheads, leatherbacks, greens, and occasionally the odd Kemp's Ridley – make the ungainly journey up the beach to lay their clutches of around a hundred eggs. These eggs will spend the next couple of months hidden under the sand as the hatchlings grow and develop. Find some ways to come out of your shell with these opportunities from the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and its partners!

Sea Grant Consortium's Facebook page at 4 PM on Thursday, May 21, 2020 to find out about some engaging at-home STEM activities you can do to teach Ocean Literacy Principle 5, "The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems."

The S.C. State Library invites full-time students from kindergarten through college to participate in the Make My Mark bookmark contest. Each student should create a tribute to their favorite story, with winning designs from each age group to be featured on an official State Library bookmark. While the S.C. State Museum is currently closed to the public, museum curators and educational staff continue to offer educational content through e-learning resources like virtual exhibits, trivia nights, and family astronomy nights.

Call for Nominations: Jerry L. Shrum PLT Outstanding Educator of the Year
Submissions due: June 15, 2020

Do you know someone that uses Project Learning Tree in a creative and innovative way? S.C. Project Learning Tree is now accepting nominations for the 2020 Jerry L. Shrum PLT Outstanding Educator of the Year Award. The recipient of the award will receive benefits including a cash prize, statewide recognition, attendance to the Forestry Association of South Carolina's annual conference, an all-expenses paid opportunity to attend the S.C. Teachers' Tour in June 2021 or 2022, and a chance to participate in the National PLT Educator of the Year Award. The nomination form can be found online , and submissions are due by June 15, 2020.
American Natural History Museum Seminars on Science

EEASC/SEEA 2020 Conference
September 24-26, 2020

In 2020, in lieu of its annual summer conference, the Environmental Educators Association of South Carolina (EEASC) will host the Southeast Environmental Education Alliance’s regional conference in Columbia, S.C., September 24-26 at EdVenture and the South Carolina State Museum. The theme is "Environmental Legacy: It's Our Story. Past, Present, and Future." For general conference information and updates, please visit the  EEASC website . Students Compete Virtually in the 2020 National Ocean Sciences Bowl
For the first time in nearly a quarter of a century, teams of high school students participated in the 2020 National Ocean Science Bowl (NOSB) Finals from thier own homes due to the ongoing public health response to COVID-19. Thanks to the extraordinary contributions of the NOSB staff, partners, participants, and dedicated volunteers, 19 student teams competed to test their knowledge of - and show their passion for - ocean science.

"Despite some of the impediments of participating remotely from different time zones, the students showed the same camaraderie and competitive spirit seen in face-to-face competitions," said Sarah Schoedinger, a senior education program manager with NOAA.

Congratulations to the teams and to NOSB for another successful year of competition!
