Education Opportunities
[ S.C. Sea Grant Consortium -September 18, 2020 ]
Dear South Carolina Educators,
You might not easily see this week's featured creature in the water, but you sure won't mistake the sting should you bump into one while frolicking in the waves! The box jellyfish (Chiropsalmus quadrumanus) is one of several jellyfish species that are found off the South Carolina coast and although small in size (5" - 6"), it is considered to be one of the most venomous. Characterized by its clear body and distinctive cuboidal shape, the box jelly can easily be identified by the four sets of tentacles dangling from the bell that are used to stun prey, which include small fish, crustaceans, and other small organisms. Box jellies are part of the Phylum Cnidaria and share their taxonomic grouping with anemones, corals, and other organisms which use nematocysts -- or stinging cells -- for both defense and stunning their prey. Often misunderstood, box jellyfish, along with other jellies, have limited horizontal mobility, which means that they often go where the currents and tides take them. So, if you happen to get stung in the water by a jellyfish, most likely, you happened to be in the path of the current when one bumped in to you! Should you get stung by a box jellyfish, be sure to take precautions and seek medical care if needed. No need to worry about bumping into these exciting and educational opportunities, though! As you start planning out your school year, be sure to box out some time in your schedule to take advantage of these offerings from the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and our partners!
Deadline Approaching
Back to Basics: Virtual Educator Science Café
"Reading, ‘Rriting, Reactions, and Recipes"
September 28, 2020 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM
Deadline to Register 9/25

Educators and parents-turned-educators are invited to join the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum as we serve up our first virtual "Back to Basics" Educator Science Café for the 2020-2021 season! There is something for all grade levels for our first café, "Reading, 'Riting, Reactions, and Recipes" -- we will feature the beloved children's book "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" as an umbrella to address ELA, the water cycle, weather and climate, and chemistry concepts. During the café, you will learn from invited science experts in weather and climate, receive lesson ideas for classroom application, and have the opportunity to network with each other.

But, that’s not all! In a new twist this year, a recipe will be shared after registration that you can make and enjoy as you participate in the café. This recipe will connect you to the science content -- and us with each other -- as we eat, learn, and share around the virtual dinner table.

This café is offered at no cost to you; however, pre-registration is required by September 25, 2020. Questions can be emailed to EV Bell or Hannah Giddens.
New Opportunities and Resources
My Ocean Science Journals and Video Series

The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium's "My Ocean Science Journals" are a creative way to engage your students and children in learning about the marine environment through an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates science, reading, critical thinking, and writing. An  elementarymiddle, and high school version of the journal is available for download and provides 10-weeks of writing prompts aligned to Ocean Literacy Essential Principles.

As a supplementary resource, discover engaging, easy, hands-on activities with the Educator Help Line Video Series that you can do with basic materials with your students and children. Each video aligns with at least one Ocean Literacy Essential Principle and is suitable for the K-12 audience. The videos can be used in conjunction with the journals or as stand-alone teaching modules.

Florida Sea Grant: Bite-Sized Science Webinars (Spanish version)

The University of Florida and Florida Sea Grant are offering Spanish versions of their popular Bite-Sized Science (Bocados de Ciencia) webinars this fall. The live 30-minute Spanish webinars will be offered at 4:00 PM EST on Tuesdays, from September 15 through December 8, 2020 (except 11/24). The webinars cover a range of marine and coastal topics and attendees can have their questions answered during the live sessions. The webinars are recorded and those recordings can be viewed at any time. Pre-registration is required. Questions can be sent to Victor Blanco.

Harbison State Forest Virtual Field Trips!

S.C. Forestry Commission Education Staff have developed virtual field trips of the environmental education programs offered at Harbison State Forest. These live forest hikes are an engaging way for students to learn about forestry and natural resources. All programs are free, typically last 25 minutes, and include a student worksheet to be completed during the hike.

These virtual programs are offered for elementary-aged students. For more information about these virtual field trips, including program descriptions, please visit https://www.state.sc.us/forest/eduvirtualfieldtrip.htm
