THIS MONTH'S STORY

The Seafood Trail Just Landed on the North Shore,

and It’s a Model for Education in Action.

June 2026

When we talk about what Cornell Cooperative Extension does best, this is it: research-backed education that turns into real community action.

The Choose Local F.I.S.H. Seafood Trail launched on the South Shore to help residents find fresh, sustainably sourced fish and shellfish from the waters right around them. Last month, we expanded to the North Shore for the first time.

With the North Shore now on the map, more producers are getting visibility, more residents are discovering what’s available locally, and more of Suffolk County’s seafood economy is getting the support it deserves. It’s the kind of initiative that starts with our Marine team’s deep expertise in local fisheries and ends with a family choosing fluke over salmon at the market on a Saturday morning.

That’s education in action. Not a lecture, not a pamphlet, but a trail that changes how people shop, eat, and connect with the working waterfront in their own community.

To help tell that story, we partnered with the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets to produce two promotional videos featuring some of the strongest voices in the local seafood industry. Watch now!

The Next Great Long Island Wine May Come from a Grape You’ve Never Heard Of

CCE Suffolk Viticulturist Alice Wise has spent over 20 years evaluating hybrid

winegrape varieties at the Long Island Horticultural Research & Extension Center, and

the results are turning heads! These hybrids are more disease-resistant, hardier through

tough winters, and producing wines that could define the next chapter of North Fork

wine country.

CCE Suffolk’s Leader-in-Training program at the Suffolk County Farm gives campers entering 7th–9th grade a chance to build real leadership skills — mentoring peers, problem-solving, and self-reflection — all while spending their summer on a working farm. LITs participate in daily camp activities alongside other campers and meet regularly with Camp Leadership staff to discover their strengths.
