With the new year officially underway, Aurora has exciting education program plans for 2014!  But before we get too far ahead, it is nice to reflect on the accomplishments of 2013 as well. Thank you to all the sponsors, teachers, students, parents, and partners who made it one of our best years yet.

This past year, Aurora hosted nine artist residencies at schools in Houston where approximately 300 students learned about and explored filmmaking with local artists. Aurora Mobile Media Literacy programs included 22 workshops and video art history lectures for both youth and adults.  These programs held in partnership with organizations and institutions such as the Texas Children's Hospital, PAIR, University of Houston, HSPVA, Rice University and even a homeschool cluster group.

In addition to our regular summer camp series which partners professional filmmakers and artists to teach hands-on narrative and experimental techniques, Aurora also partnered with American Festival for the Arts on a composer and filmmaker camp, and with Girls Rock Camp Houston to teach experimental  documentary filmmaking.

2014 looks to be another big year for us as our programs continue to grow and improve. We are adding partners, such as MD Anderson Cancer Center, increasing our work with Texas Children's Hospital, and maintaining partnerships with both Young Audiences of Houston and Writers in the Schools for more Mobile Media Literacy Outreach Artist Residencies in area schools. Plus we have added another camp session this summer, for which registration starts today.

Please remember that all of this would not be possible without your support. We hope that you will consider becoming a member of Aurora Picture Show, making a donation, or becoming a corporate sponsor.

All the best,

Camilo Gonzalez

Media Arts Educators Mel House and Christine Gwosdz
At Reynolds Elementary, Mel and Christine taught filmmaking basics to the students - covering everything from storyboards and scripts  to camera placement and green screen techniques.  The after-school program offered the kids opportunities to apply their new knowledge in a variety of filmmaking formats: experimental, animation, documentary, or narrative storytelling.

Media Arts Educator Felisa Prieto
At Pine Shadows Elementary School, 4th and 5th graders were introduced to Experimental Video with an emphasis on Surrealism. Each student made a storyboard, but worked in collaboration with the group to make a single short that would include elements from curriculum of their other classes. Students were presented with experimental videos, animations, performance pieces and surrealist images, including photography and paintings. They were encouraged to discuss their meaning and reason to be, which served as inspiration for their films.

Thanks to the support of the Texas Commission on the Arts, Aurora was able to provide quarterly animation workshops at their outpatient center.  As youth waited for treatment, our Media Arts Educators worked with the youth to create stop-motion animated short films. Arts in healthcare settings can help patients cope with an acute illness.

Joint Summer Camp with Filmmakers and Composers
Our former high school intern, Malik Waldon, took part in the filmmaker and composer summer camp presented in partnership with American Festival for the Arts where teenage filmmakers were partnered with teen composers to create unique works.  Malik's collaborative film so impressive that our Curator, Mary Magsamen, included the film in an Aurora screening of local works called Houston Is So Hot!

Origami Crane at Chicago CineYouth film festival
Aurora is particularly proud of some of our filmmakers from the 2012 Summer Boot Camp whose short film "Origami Crane" created at Aurora was accepted into the 2013 Chicago CineYouth film festival. Some of the filmmakers were even able to attend the festival and gave an Aurora shout-out from the stage during the Q&A.  Congratulations Andrew Lu, Jonathan Lu, Joseph Orr, and Shaeli Haliburton.
