The Intersection of Home Buying and Stress

Purchasing a home is a significant milestone, often accompanied by substantial stress. Financial pressures, emotional investments, and complex logistics can overwhelm even the most prepared buyers. Recognizing and addressing these psychological challenges is crucial for a smoother transition into homeownership. Learn more about combatting this stress in our latest blog.

Psychology Fact of the Week: The Sunk Cost Fallacy

Have you ever kept watching a boring movie just because you already paid for the ticket? That’s the sunk cost fallacy at work.

It’s a common "thinking trap" where we feel pressure to continue with something, like a job, relationship, or project, just because we’ve already invested a lot of time, money, or effort into it. Logically, these past investments or "sunk costs" don't necessarily make things worth continuing to pursue, although we sometimes feel like they do.

Research shows that simply recognizing this bias can help us make decisions based on what’s best moving forward, not what we’ve already lost.

Wellness Insights: Digital Detoxing

To maximize the rejuvenating benefits of your vacation, try intentionally disconnecting from social media and limiting non-essential technology use. This "digital fast" can significantly reduce stress and improve overall well-being, allowing for deeper engagement with your experiences, better sleep, and richer real-world connections.

Consider designating specific "tech-free" times or even entire days to immerse yourself in your travels. Disconnecting from digital distractions allows for greater present-moment awareness, a cornerstone of mindfulness. Interested in trying it out? Here's a few insights from our National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, Jennifer Stover.

While on a recent vacation, I decided to try a digital detox. I made a point to unplug from my phone, not entirely, but mostly. I did not check social media and limited email to a brief time during the day to delete unnecessary emails and star important ones for our return home. I limited my other phone use to trip-related apps (AllTrails, Google Maps, so we didn’t get lost). During our trip, I talked to my kids and my partner, played games at night, and engaged on a level we don’t usually make time for. During our hikes, I paid attention to my surroundings and noticed how many different trees we walked past. I noticed rocks ( yes, rocks), how the sunlight plays on the water, and so many other things, like the sound of the wind and birds. By the end of our vacation, I was relaxed and rejuvenated. My digital detox allowed me to be mindful and present, and most of all, it allowed me to slow down and enjoy my family.

During your vacation this summer, I strongly recommend trying a digital detox. Mindfulness, promoted by unplugging, can enhance your vacation experiences. When we put our phones away and pay attention to where we are in the present moment, we allow ourselves time to engage and enjoy our surroundings fully. The vacation experience can become more meaningful and relaxing when we slow down and pay attention to the little things—at least it worked for me.
