Sixty years of excellence in Hairdressing

WOODBURY, NJ---Another longstanding business in Woodbury's downtown is celebrating a milestone. Edward's Hairstyling, located at 14 S. Broad Street is celebrating its 60th Anniversary. According to Cindy Cirone Trovato, co-owner of the salon, "Carrying on my father's legacy has been both challenging and rewarding. He built this business from scratch and through three generations we have proudly continued his success."

Edward Cirone started Edward's Hairstyling in 1957. He and his wife Millie opened in their current location in 1960 and the rest is history. Trovato's partner, Mike Frasca, started at the salon in 1975 with Edward. Frasca states, "Edward started his career in the predominantly female profession of hairstyling when it wasn't so fashionable and was able to make a name for himself in the Delaware Valley. Doing so, he opened the doors for not only myself but many men in hairdressing."

During the 1960's, Edward Cirone earned accolades in Who's Who in Hairdressing and taught at hair shows locally, NYC and even Rome, Italy. He was named Chairman of the New Jersey Board of Beauty Culture and he was also head of licensing for the State of New Jersey. When Cindy was about four years old she and her father had their photo taken with Dick Clark and Chubby Checker during an appearance on American Bandstand.

Cindy is the only one of Edward's five children who took interest in the business. She worked beside her parents and Mike Frasca. After Edwards passing in 1978, Millie ran the business until 1999 when she retired. Mike and Cindy took over and continue to make Edward's Hairstyling a pillar in this community. Trovato states, "Since my father opened this shop, we have called Woodbury our home. My husband and I live in the town and we do whatever we can to help support the community.'

Trovato continues, "My dad prided himself on treating everyone like family both staff and clients alike. The client always came first. However, he valued his staff members and continually invested in their education because he knew how important it was to keep up with the trends, especially in the beauty industry."

Their creative team of stylists is now managed by Jennifer Maurer, who also lives in Woodbury. Maurer states, "Ongoing education is what keeps us on top of our game. We love learning new trends in cutting and coloring."

Not only does the business transcend generations of family workers but it also transcends generations of customers. Rosemary Lukens, a regular at Edward's, explains, "My mother started taking me to Edward's when I was seven years old to get "pixie" haircuts. This is where she had her hair done so she trusted them to do my hair as well".

According to Lukens the trend continued. She brought her children to the salon when they were growing up and now as adults, her children continue to frequent the shop.

When asked what makes a small business like this successful Trovato responds, "Consistency of good services are what customers remember and they will tell their friends. You also have to change with the times, ensure that you use quality products, provide guidance to your clients and have what your clients need in stock at all times." She continues, "Our motto is 'Quality Never Goes Out of Style'."

One unique feature at Edward's is that they specialize in cutting and styling curly hair. Trovato is a "Curly Hair" expert, trained and certified at the DevaChan Institute in New York and continues her education with Curly Hair Artistry. Trovato explains, "Cutting curly hair is an art and is something you need to be trained to do. You cut the hair dry and have to sculpt around the client. The products are also different. They are applied differently, clients are educated on how to use the products to work with their new style."

Edward's offers something for the entire family including multidimensional coloring, Brazilian blowouts, Curly Hair Experiences, up-dos, perms, straightening, make-up, waxing, facials and manicures. Every Tuesday, senior citizens receive a 20% discount off of all services.

As Edward's celebrates their 60th year in business they will also offer monthly specials including paraffin hand waxing, chair massages, hand massages and more. Check out their website and Facebook for more details.

In addition, Trovato has been involved in Main Street Woodbury, the Greater Woodbury Chamber of Commerce and the Woodbury Merchants and Professional Association. Trovato is one of the founding members of Main Street who helped to coordinate Woodbury's Block Party, Lunch Munch summer series, Ghost Tours, and Candlelight Shopping. Her husband David, owner of AVC Media in Woodbury, has served on Woodbury's council for the past four years and is now serving as the Council President. Both Trovato and her husband are deeply rooted in the city. It is their home, workplace and family.
