Efforts to Address Panhandling Slowly Moves Forward – At this week's meeting, the Board approved my motion to promote a public education campaign for our residents and business community on resources available for panhandlers and to discourage drivers from giving to panhandlers. While this is a step in the right direction, my colleagues would not approve my related motion that would have directed our staff to have a draft panhandling ordinance prepared for discussion in a Public Safety Committee meeting and/or Closed session. I would have thought that the many residents that have contacted each of our offices regarding panhandling over the last three years would have given my Board colleagues a reason to move forward with at least discussing a draft ordinance to address this important issue. Below, I’ll share more with you on my progress addressing panhandling and the upcoming public education campaign.
