Truck drivers carry a lot of responsibility while out on the road. Aside from transporting freight from one location to another, businesses and families depend on timely turnaround times. However, perhaps the most important responsibility of truck drivers is following safety regulations daily.
Safety is a big topic in the world of truck driving. In fact, the American Trucking Association reports investing $9.5 billion annually on trucking safety. This includes driver safety training, which makes up 36% of the spending in this sector. The other categories for safety spending includes on-board safety technology, safety incentive pay, and compliance with safety regulations.
It’s no secret that there is a lot of emphasis on safety in the trucking industry. But why does this category stand out above the rest in terms of priority?
Safety Inspections Save Lives - Inspecting the condition of your truck can save lives. It’s important to check the brakes, steering, and other elements to prevent serious accidents from occurring as you travel on your route.
Returning Home to Your Family - You spend days (or even weeks) out on the road providing for your family. Returning to your family at the end of your route is often top priority. Following government enforced safety regulations helps keep drivers safe and sound so you can return home.
Let’s face it - It’s simply a better driving experience when you follow safety precautions. No truck driver needs or wants the added stress of feeling in danger while out on the road. Luckily, this can be avoided by investing time in safety education for truck drivers as well as regular inspections of your vehicle.
Better opportunities - The reality is that most trucking companies value experienced drivers with a track record of safe driving. Good trucking companies consider drivers who value safety as much as we do and ensure that they follow government safety procedures. Taking safety seriously saves lives, opens doors, and helps to further your driving career.
Large trucks make up slightly less than 7 percent of all vehicles on our roads, highways and interstates, and truck drivers face rigorous testing and certification procedures, making them some of the safest drivers on the road. That’s why no truck driver should ever take for granted the training, certifications, and inspections he or she might have under their belts. Always keep your safety procedures in the front of your mind.
