“Is the Lord among us or not?”
Dear People of Ascension,
In our lectionary for this season, the Israelites are making their slow way through the wilderness following their liberation from slavery in Egypt. It is strange and scary. Sometimes they wonder if they were better off in the familiarity of bondage. They doubt Moses’ leadership, to say nothing of God’s intentions towards them. As we heard last week, they grumble and quarrel. I think it’s because they are afraid. In this week’s reading, they are thirsty, with no water and no visible prospects. They ask, “Is God among us or not?”
How do you recognize God’s presence? When we are amazed by the beauty of nature or swept up in the swell of music, when doors open and prayers are answered, when we are moved by love and gratitude, many of us find it easy to sense the nearness of the Holy One. But in our wilderness seasons- when we feel lost, when we confront persistent injustice, when we come to the end of our knowledge and strength, we too may wonder where God is, and how we will make it through.
The text tells of a miracle- water in the desert, springing from dry stone. It’s not always so dramatic, but the image speaks to me of hidden, unexpected grace that provides what we need. God journeys with us- in our spiritual practice; in the stories we tell; in our own acts of brave love, creativity and mercy; in the natural world and in our life together in community. Our faith teaches that God with us- Emmanuel- draws especially near in our longing for wholeness and justice, in our need and our thirst.
In all the challenges of our world and our own lives, dear people of Ascension, let us notice both this question and the steadfast, surprising ways we encounter God in our midst. May that presence sustain us in all our journeys and seasons.
Liz

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion
If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.
In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

Immigration Legal Support Fund – Recently our diocese announced a new Immigration Legal Support Fund to support immigrant families in our congregations and neighborhoods throughout the Diocese of New York. The Legal Fund will help those navigating immigration under urgent and vulnerable circumstances to access legal resources. We're starting with a $50,000 contribution from the Bishop’s discretionary funds. Help us to match this amount to keep families together. With your support, we can do more so that no one faces the system alone. Your contribution makes possible same-day response, family preparedness, limited-scope appearances, and urgent filings. You can contribute here. To learn more about the Immigration Legal Support Fund Click here.
