I need to begin by saying that we, here at CSWS, are incredibly lucky to be part of a tremendously warm-hearted, fun-loving and generous community. It had been a few years since I attended an auction, and I admit that I had forgotten how much absolute joy and goodwill imbue this event (not to mention talent and creativity).
I was struck upon entering our new event venue just how striking the decor was, with colorful and eye-catching art reproductions dotting the walls of the hall, and the bold color scheme and overhead signage, which seemed to make everything pop! Huge shout outs to the fabulous decor team, whose love for our community, eye for detail, and artistry were on full display.

CSWS Administration on the Red Carpet!

Such a charming venue was sure to attract interesting attendees, and there were many spotted along the Red Carpet: Along with many well-dressed ladies and gents (and even a few divas), renowned artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keefe, Salvador Dali and the ever-soothing Bob "friendly little clouds" Ross made appearances. There were also several actual works of art in real life, incuding Degas's ballerina, Monet's waterlilies, Hokusai's great wave of Kanagawa, and even a Greek karyatides, elegantly making their rounds. (Check out the photos farther below and even more on our school's Shutterfly page to see who you can spot!)
Thoughtful, interesting and well-crafted auction items, as well as many culinary delights from the Tanaka family and their many lovely helpers, a dynamic Live Auction, and a no-holds-barred dancing party rounded out the wonderful evening. A very special thank you goes out to Emcee John Mellberg for bringing such enthusiasm and wit to his role, to Lisa Mellberg for lending her photographic talents once again, to Tim Madden, our volunteer Auctioneer, who kept everyone's energy up throughout the Live Auction and Fund-A-Need, and to Alex East, who always makes sure everyone has a good time on the dance floor.

I save my deepest gratitude, admiration and respect for Festivals and Events Manager Kate Barba (pictured at left with her husband, Pete) and her hard-working Auction Planning Committee, who dedicated themselves over the past many months to ensuring we had not only a successful fundraising event, but a community celebration infused with just a ton of heart and soul. Thank you, Kate. You are a wonder!
If you were able to make it, we offer you our heartfelt thanks for helping to make it such a successful evening! For those of you who couldn't make it, we missed you! And, there are still some ways you can support the event and our school (and have some fun!):
Several of our Fixed Price events still have space for you!
- Women's Bike and Wine Tasting Foothills Tour (5 spots left at $50 each for this fun, May 3 event. A second date of May 17 may be added if the May 3 event sells out.)
- Traditional Vietnamese Dinner (7 spots left @$30 each - Sept. 7)
- Kombucha Brewing Class (17 spots left @ $25 each - April 7)
- Natural Dye Fiber Class (8 spots left at $30 each - Aug. 3)

Another way you can be a part of the success of the event is by supporting this year's
Fund-A-Need
, the beautification of our Music Playground and Upper Grades Play Yard. The project includes installing new, aesthetic fencing around the playground area, a new play structure for the younger children and beautifully crafted wooden benches for our older students. If you are interested in learning more about our plans for these spaces, contact
[email protected]
. To donate to the fund, please stop by the main or development offices, and we'd be delighted to help you!
Thank you to everyone who once again pulled together to help make our Auction a success, and enjoy the coming weekend.
In spirited community,
Nicole Deutsch
Director of Community Development

Eighth Grade Project Presentations!
Our Ever-Changing World
|
|
One of the most unique and powerful aspects of the eighth grade curriculum at CSWS is the 8th grade project. This project draws upon and deepens many of the skills that the students have been developing throughout their Waldorf journey. These include curiosity, research and analysis, public speaking, interacting with adults, and of course, courage and imagination! The theme for this year’s project,
Our Ever-Changing World,
came directly from Cedar Springs’ founder, Nancy Poer, in her introduction to this year’s faculty/staff/board retreat at WhiteFeather Ranch. The members of the Class of 2019 are seeking a greater understanding of our world by choosing a specific topic within this theme to study in depth and present. To assist them in research, as well as practice their skills in interacting with adults, each student has conducted interviews with one or more professionals within their field.
They will present their findings to the CSWS community, along with an artistic offering, during the week of April 1st at the El Dorado Adventist School, 1900 Broadway, Placerville, CA. We have been working very hard on these, and are looking forward to sharing them with you! Please note that due to the length of each session, we recommend them only for children aged ten years or older. Several presentations (noted below) also have content inappropriate for younger children.

CSWS Positions Available
Our school is much in need of an early childhood extended care assistant. We are seeking a warm, responsible individual to help supervise this program. Experience with young children and knowledge of Waldorf pedagogy is preferred, but not required. The extended care position hours are Monday through Friday, 12 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. To meet state licensing requirements, applicants must have 12 ECE units, and be willing to comply with current CPR and First Aid training, clear a Livescan background check, a TB test, and a health screening and comply with current California vaccination requirements. Please send inquiries to: Veronica Gunasekara at
[email protected]
The College of Teachers is seeking individuals who can act as substitute teachers. With our pedagogical chair position now vacant, we no longer have a go-to for when our teachers are ill or need to be away for the day for personal or family needs. With the cold and flu season approaching, the College would like to begin compiling a list of people, especially those with a teaching credential or experience working with children, who can support our faculty in this way. Please contact Amy Roehl at
[email protected]
if you can help with this.
