“The most radiant windows illumine men’s minds so that they may travel through it to an apprehension of God’s light.”
For this purpose, the sanctuary of Normandale Lutheran Church is filled with light. Natural light falls from skylights above allowing glimpses of God’s sky above us. Colored light is refracted through symbols in the stained-glass side windows.
Stained glass is the only visual art whose beauty is created, not by reflected light, but by light refracting through it. As Lawrence Lee writes in his book, Stained Glass, “No art form took its spiritual role as literally as did this one, whose images were not merely illustrated but were activated through light – a phenomenon which was considered to be divine.”
The sanctuary of Normandale Lutheran Church has twenty-one (21) stained glass windows. These windows form two (2) separate sets, distinguished not only by their creator and time of installation, but also by their unifying theme.
Join us Sunday, August 3 for a tour through each one of these stained glass windows in our sanctuary that will allow you the opportunity to look at our place for worship in a completely different way. We'll start at the display case in the narthex just outside the main entrance to the sanctuary and then go inside!
