Phill Courtney on conversations with the homeless
Sunday, July 18 - "Down, but Not Out”
Phill Courtney, a regular attendee of the RUCC’s “Seekers” class since 2011, will deliver the message this Sunday. During the pandemic, Phil grew a beard. One day, bearded Phil, decided to stand at the Alabama freeway offramp, and hold a sign that read, “Down, but not out. Please help.” Phil, an advocate for the homeless, will share his eye-opening experiences with the congregation as we remember Jesus’ words, “As you did it to the least of these, you did it to me.”

Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team
"The Civil War ended 154 years ago. The Confederacy, as former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has said, was on the wrong side of humanity. Our public entities should no longer play a role in distorting history by honoring a secessionist government that waged war against the United States to preserve white supremacy and the enslavement of millions of people. It’s past time for the South – and the rest of the nation – to bury the myth of the Lost Cause once and for all."
From the Environmental Justice Team
Oceans are at risk. The ocean absorbs about a quarter of human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide annually, thereby changing seawater chemistry and making seawater more acidic. More acidic waters create repercussions along the marine food chain, such as making it more difficult for shells and coral reefs to form. Recent research indicates that 75% of the world's coral reefs are threatened. Pathogens thrive in warming seas, and this has been linked to significant increases in sea life disease and death, which in turn impacts the human populations that depend on them.
