Dear Eisenhower Families,

It's hard to believe that Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. By the way, Happy Groundhog Day! We want to send a big THANK YOU out to all of room parent volunteers who are hard at work planning crafts and games. Needless to say, we want all of the children to have a wonderful time handing out Valentines to one another! We never want anyone to feel left out. Throughout our daily routine, our staff is constantly reinforcing the importance of working together and being respectful of one another's feelings. Collaboration and collective efficacy is a unifying theme of our staff's behavioral expectations for all students and ourselves. As we work to reinforce appropriate social interactions, we are always reminding and reteaching the students of the need to help those around them. In learning to be a good friend to all, students begin to develop a higher degree of empathy, moral accountability, and, most importantly, the civic responsibility of being a productive member of a classroom and school community.

Valentine’s Day is simply an extension of teaching our children to care about the feelings of others through the expression of acceptance in the form of a small token of friendship. Caring about others by giving them a little token reminder that they are special for who they are is a wonderful gift that we impart on our own children each and every day. A kiss goodbye, a hug on the way out the door, saying “I love you,” or a special note in their lunch, are all ways in which we tell them that they are important to us. It is within these ideals that we expect and hope they lead their lives in their interactions with others and one day with their own children. Knowing they will do their best to be understanding, kind, patient, and gentle with others is at the heart of why we celebrate this day. Believing that someone else finds us special and cares enough about us to express their fondness has to be one of the most profoundly, wonderfully, and powerful ways in which our lives are shaped.

During the month of February, our students will be partaking in the American Heart Association's Kids Heart Challenge. If your family would like to participate in the fundraising aspect of this event, we ask that you please click on our American Heart Association Fundraiser flyer below. Early childhood, kindergarten, and first grade students will also be making cards to donate to the Cards for Hospitalized Kids organization. We look forward to a month of elevating our focus on healthy living and caring for others.

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day,

Your Eisenhower Family

Valentines' Card & Party Update

Eisenhower, Ross, and Sullivan want to provide clarification regarding Valentine's Day expectations for parties.

Students are welcome to bring Valentines for all of their classmates.

Valentines will be exchanged before the parties begin.

Students may not bring candy or food items to pass out with the Valentine cards.

If Valentine’s cards purchased are accompanied by stickers, bookmarks, pencils, erasers, or other non-food items, they may be passed out with valentine cards.

Please do not feel obligated to purchase items to pass out to the students.

Our PTO room parents are planning some great crafts and activities for the students’ parties.

EARLY CHILDHOOD

NEWS

Our early childhood students are finishing up their study on clothing. We had fun learning about the process of creating clothes, the distinctive features of clothing and the varied types of clothes we wear. The students retold the story of ‘The Mitten’ with the help of a giant mitten, practiced writing letters in shaving cream and played a mitten letter matching game.

KINDERGARTEN

NEWS

Learning to write a sentence using three key components, begin with an uppercase letter, using finger spaces between words, and ending with punctuation. These are a few of the many goals we have for our kindergarteners at the end of the second trimester.  We are so proud of all they are accomplishing!

FIRST GRADE

NEWS

First grade students are learning about nature and cycles. They are learning about weather and seasonal cycles in our literacy curriculum. This complements our science unit this trimester which will address cycles that occur in the day and night sky. It will be wonderful to see the students make connections between our literacy and science curriculums. Ask your child about which cycle they have found the most interesting.

Upcoming District Assessments

There are many things synonymous with the winter months, including cold weather, winter sports, and warm drinks. Well, here at school the winter and spring months are synonymous with state testing. Beginning in January, the State of Illinois assesses all Multilingual Learners (MLs)(formerly known as English Learners or ELs) using the ACCESS Test (Accessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State), which measures the language proficiency of multilingual learners over time in states across the country in four areas: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The ACCESS window in the State of Illinois runs from January 17 through March 5. An alternate version of this assessment is also available for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities.

Century Book Club Readers!

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.

*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!

Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!

Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.

Students will also receive a special prize from the office.

Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.

Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.

Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.
