Eisenhower Eagle Express

Engage ALL students in experiences that inspire EACH to grow as learners, individuals, and community members.

February 21st, 2025

Dear Eisenhower Families,

As we work with the children, we must always remind ourselves to impart a Growth Mindset upon them. Nurturing a spirit of perseverance is essential in developing a Growth Mindset. Teaching a child that through dedication and hard work they can accomplish their goals is an incredibly healthy outlook and mindset towards becoming a lifelong learner. A Growth Mindset teaches children to learn from mistakes, improve from feedback, and seek inspiration from others who have accomplished their goals through difficulties, failures, and life’s unforeseen setbacks.

Having the resiliency to take on new challenges and problems are what set apart those with a Growth Mindset. We call this “Grit”. More importantly, a Growth Mindset sets us up to have a healthy and positive outlook towards life. And, above all, if your child says they can’t do it, always add the word “YET” to the end of that sentence.

We also want to thank all of our Valentine's Day room parent volunteers for putting together all of the wonderful parties!

Update from the Nurse’s Office

Some of you may have noticed some updated procedures in the nurse's office regarding medication management in your school. These procedures further promote the health and safety of students in compliance with the Illinois School Code and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The complete procedures will be sent to impacted families as well as shared through upcoming principal newsletters. A few of the updates include:

  • Medication will no longer be accepted by the school office staff, nor through your child’s backpack.
  • Medication will need to be dropped off through an appointment with the nurse.
  • All controlled medications will need to be counted by the parent in front of the nurse, and then counted by the nurse in front of the parent, and then also counted by a third person (another nurse or administrator) in front of the parent. This is why an appointment is necessary for medication drop off.

Your school nurse will be reaching out to connect with parents who are impacted by these changes. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school nurse.

Early Childhood, Kindergarten, and First Grade News

In early childhood, we are learning the steps to take to help us calm down when we are feeling big emotions. We have learned new emotions, such as disappointment and frustration. The students are practicing how to respond: 1) Put your hands on your belly. 2) Tell yourself, “Stop.” 3) Name your feeling. 4)Take some deep belly breaths.

Tuesday, Feb 18th was kindergarten's 100th day of school! The entire day was led in fun activities involving making, building and creating 100. Our students not only counted by 1s to 100 but they also counted by 10s.

In first grade, Students have been exploring the value of kindness and are learning how to recognize and demonstrate kindness across various situations. One way we show kindness is by helping others.

Assessment Update

There are many things synonymous with the winter months, including cold weather, winter sports, and warm drinks. Well, here at school the winter and spring months are synonymous with state testing. Currently, we are focusing on the State of Illinois's ACCESS Test for Multilingual Learners in grades K-12. Coming soon, students in grades 3-12 will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, which is a statewide test in English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need. This year’s testing window is from March 3 to April 30. Your school will let you know of their chosen testing window within this timeframe as it approaches. An alternate version of the assessment is also available for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities as well.

In addition to this assessment, students in grades 5, 8, and 11 in the State of Illinois are also required to take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA), which measures students' progress in the area of science over time. Both the Illinois Assessment of Readiness in ELA and Mathematics and the Illinois Science Assessment are aligned with state standards in their subject areas.

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.

*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!

Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!

Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.

Students will also receive a special prize from the office.

Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.

Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.

Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.

District Information Section

April 1 - Referendum Question on the Ballot

As you may know, District 23 has placed a question on the ballot seeking support for a tax rate increase to provide the needed funding that would allow us to build a 6 classroom addition at Eisenhower.

For more information about the referendum and information about voting, CLICK THIS LINK.

We want to meet the State mandate for Full-Day Kindergarten, improve safety and security, and provide adequate spaces for instruction and student support.

The current proposal is reduced by 25% to address the concerns about overall cost for the project and enables us to meet the current challenges without cutting programs and services, and increasing class sizes in grades 4-8.
