Eisenhower Eagle Express

Engage ALL students in experiences that inspire EACH to grow as learners, individuals, and community members.

March 7th, 2025

Dear Eisenhower Families,

First, let me start by saying that it was wonderful to see so many of our families at last night's Family Literacy Night. We had a great time seeing the children enjoy the station activities. It was also good to see so many of our families connecting with one another.

Also, thank you once again to all of our families that completed Finn's Mission, learned hands-only CPR, and donated to the American Heart Association's Kids Heart Challenge fundraiser. Our school community raised $17,860.92!

As we move into our third trimester, I just want to spend a little time stressing the importance of making reading an enjoyable and fun experience with your child.  On that note, how we model learning is more important than what we are learning.  When dedicating 20-minutes each night to reading, it is important to remember that we want our children to experience success and, more importantly, enjoyment with the time they spend with us.

Yes, recognizing sight words, correctly pronouncing letter sounds and putting them all nicely together to decode a multisyllabic word is what we strive for in order to produce fluent readers. However, it is within this highly complex sequence that we especially want to impart comprehension for the enjoyment and pleasure of reading.

When reading with your child, take a few moments to scan the text and find words that you know they may find of a particular challenge.  Be prepared mentally to provide wait-time (patience) to allow them the opportunity to decode (sound out) the word.  If you find yourself in a situation where you need to provide assistance, take a moment to properly pronounce the individual and/or combination sounds.  Let them hear you pronounce the word correctly and then ask them to pronounce it back to you.  Upon completion, have them finish the sentence and ask them what they think that word means.  If they are having difficulty with describing what the word means, please provide them with a context clue from the sentence and/or visual in the story.  Please remember to follow up with your own explanation of the definition as well as share additional synonyms for that word.  It is very important that you use rich and descriptive language while discussing any spoken or written language.  The connections they make will astound you, as well as their own social and academic language usage.

However, as these learning moments connect you to your child, so to does your disposition.  Remember, to share stories with them.  Take turns reading, using plenty of intonation, developing character voices, pointing to pictures, and, most importantly, laughing. The most powerful encoding (learning) occurs when there is a positive emotion tied to it, whether it is love or laughter, and I know we all want to share both of these during every moment of our child’s life.

When you have a moment, if you would please take the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey helps with our strategic planning and school improvement process.

Spring Break iPad Collection

Teachers will be collecting iPads once again, for Spring Break. Please check with your child to make sure the iPad is current on updates; if an update is needed, the iPad will need to be connected to WiFi and power. Also, if your child will miss the last day(s) before Spring Break, please make sure the iPad is left at school with the teacher. Our iPad collections continue to help us emphasize healthy breaks for students and families while ensuring each student comes back to a working device, especially as we enter the final quarter. Thanks, as always, for your support at home!

Update from the Nurse’s Office

Some of you may have noticed some updated procedures in the nurse's office regarding medication management in your school. These procedures further promote the health and safety of students in compliance with the Illinois School Code and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The complete procedures will be sent to impacted families as well as shared through upcoming principal newsletters. A few of the updates include:

  • Medication will no longer be accepted by the school office staff, nor through your child’s backpack.
  • Medication will need to be dropped off through an appointment with the nurse.
  • All controlled medications will need to be counted by the parent in front of the nurse, and then counted by the nurse in front of the parent, and then also counted by a third person (another nurse or administrator) in front of the parent. This is why an appointment is necessary for medication drop off.

Your school nurse will be reaching out to connect with parents who are impacted by these changes. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school nurse.

Early Childhood, Kindergarten, and First Grade News

In early childhood, our students completed their study on light. We learned about what objects produce light, what happens when light is blocked, and how we use light. The students conducted many experiments with making shadows and exploring different types of light.

This week in kindergarten, we began our new Mystery Science lesson on Pushes and Pulls with an anchor phenomenon where students investigate how pushes and pulls affect the motion of barges, and how other machines allow us to use barges to move large amounts of objects.

In first grade, students have been exploring unique traits that animals and plants have to help them survive. Ask your child to share a unique trait they learned about.

Assessment Update

There are many things synonymous with the winter months, including cold weather, winter sports, and warm drinks. Well, here at school the winter and spring months are synonymous with state testing. Currently, we are focusing on the State of Illinois's ACCESS Test for Multilingual Learners in grades K-12. Coming soon, students in grades 3-12 will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, which is a statewide test in English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need. This year’s testing window is from March 3 to April 30. Your school will let you know of their chosen testing window within this timeframe as it approaches. An alternate version of the assessment is also available for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities as well.

In addition to this assessment, students in grades 5, 8, and 11 in the State of Illinois are also required to take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA), which measures students' progress in the area of science over time. Both the Illinois Assessment of Readiness in ELA and Mathematics and the Illinois Science Assessment are aligned with state standards in their subject areas.

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.

*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!

Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!

Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.

Students will also receive a special prize from the office.

Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.

Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.

Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.

April 1 - Referendum Question on the Ballot

As you may know, District 23 has placed a question on the ballot seeking support for a tax rate increase to provide the needed funding that would allow us to build a 6 classroom addition at Eisenhower.

For more information about the referendum and information about voting, CLICK THIS LINK.

We want to meet the State mandate for Full-Day Kindergarten, improve safety and security, and provide adequate spaces for instruction and student support.

The current proposal is reduced by 25% to address the concerns about overall cost for the project and enables us to meet the current challenges without cutting programs and services, and increasing class sizes in grades 4-8.

75 Years of Vocal and Instrumental Music in District 23

You're invited to a community concert on March 14 - 6:00pm @ Hersey High School to celebrate 75 years of music in our schools.

March is Youth Art month and Prospect Heights Library proudly showcases artwork from local students in D23. The Young Artists Reception is on Monday, March 10th 6-8pm. Artwork will be displayed for the entire month of March.
