Eisenhower Eagle Express

Engage ALL students in experiences that inspire EACH to grow as learners, individuals, and community members.

March 21st, 2025

Dear Eisenhower Families,

With all of the wonderful growth we've seen in the children these last seven months and spring break arriving, we just want to take a moment to thank you for all of your hard work and your partnership. The children continue to amaze all of us with their growth. We want to continue promoting their belief in themselves and fostering goals, while acknowledging that it's okay to make a mistake, fail, or have a setback. True growth is working through obstacles with patience and persistency. Teaching the children to move forward with their learning requires teaching resilience. As with all learning, the more we practice, the better we become. With that being said, please continue reading with your child, sharing rich conversations, and getting them up and moving. Although nine days doesn't sound like a lot, every moment is precious and 20-minutes of daily reading and discussion is another wonderful way we share our lives with our children.

Also, we have updated our calendar, and the last day for Early Childhood is Thursday, May 29th.

Have a Wonderful Spring Break!

Your Eisenhower Family

Spring Break iPad Collection

Teachers will be collecting iPads once again, for Spring Break. Please check with your child to make sure the iPad is current on updates; if an update is needed, the iPad will need to be connected to WiFi and power. Also, if your child will miss the last day(s) before Spring Break, please make sure the iPad is left at school with the teacher. Our iPad collections continue to help us emphasize healthy breaks for students and families while ensuring each student comes back to a working device, especially as we enter the final quarter. Thanks, as always, for your support at home!

Update from the Nurse’s Office

Some of you may have noticed some updated procedures in the nurse's office regarding medication management in your school. These procedures further promote the health and safety of students in compliance with the Illinois School Code and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The complete procedures will be sent to impacted families as well as shared through upcoming principal newsletters. A few of the updates include:

  • Medication will no longer be accepted by the school office staff, nor through your child’s backpack.
  • Medication will need to be dropped off through an appointment with the nurse.
  • All controlled medications will need to be counted by the parent in front of the nurse, and then counted by the nurse in front of the parent, and then also counted by a third person (another nurse or administrator) in front of the parent. This is why an appointment is necessary for medication drop off.

Your school nurse will be reaching out to connect with parents who are impacted by these changes. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school nurse.

Early Childhood, Kindergarten, and First Grade News

In early childhood, our students finished their study on sand this week. We learned about where we can find sand, the animals that live in sand, and how we can use sand. The students practiced patterning fish, graphing, and number identification with seashells.

This week in kindergarten, the students worked on solving addition problems with totals up to 10.  Ask your child some addition problems using everyday items at home or at the store.

In first grade, students have been learning to add two-digit numbers using different strategies. Ask your child to show you how many ways they can add a set of two-digit numbers.

Assessment Update

There are many things synonymous with the winter months, including cold weather, winter sports, and warm drinks. Well, here at school the winter and spring months are synonymous with state testing. Currently, we are focusing on the State of Illinois's ACCESS Test for Multilingual Learners in grades K-12. Coming soon, students in grades 3-12 will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, which is a statewide test in English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need. This year’s testing window is from March 3 to April 30. Your school will let you know of their chosen testing window within this timeframe as it approaches. An alternate version of the assessment is also available for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities as well.

In addition to this assessment, students in grades 5, 8, and 11 in the State of Illinois are also required to take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA), which measures students' progress in the area of science over time. Both the Illinois Assessment of Readiness in ELA and Mathematics and the Illinois Science Assessment are aligned with state standards in their subject areas.

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.

*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!

Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!

Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.

Students will also receive a special prize from the office.

Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.

Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.

Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.

District Information Section

April 1 - Referendum Question on the Ballot

As you may know, District 23 has placed a question on the ballot seeking support for a tax rate increase to provide the needed funding that would allow us to build a 6 classroom addition at Eisenhower.

For more information about the referendum and information about voting, CLICK THIS LINK.

We want to meet the State mandate for Full-Day Kindergarten, improve safety and security, and provide adequate spaces for instruction and student support.

The current proposal is reduced by 25% to address the concerns about overall cost for the project and enables us to meet the current challenges without cutting programs and services, and increasing class sizes in grades 4-8.

PowerSchool Global Breach Update

PowerSchool informed us and their other customers that they are beginning to send email communication to families who may have been affected by their global data breach. PowerSchool has provided this webpage (HERE) to help answer any questions and provide important information and resources. If you have District-related questions, please see our District technology information webpage (HERE).
