Eisenhower Eagle Express

"Engage ALL students in experiences that inspire EACH to grow as learners, individuals,

and community members."

March 22nd, 2024

Ms. Goldstein and our entire staff at Eisenhower would like to thank all of our students and families for participating in our annual Kids Heart Challenge fundraising campaign. We hope that our students and families have learned a little more about healthy lifestyle choices. We are also happy to announce that our school raised $13,737.77 to help in the fight against heart disease for the American Heart Association.

As part of our month of February service learning project heart theme, our students created cards for the Cards for Hospitalized Kids Foundation. We know these cards will go towards providing smiles and brightening the lives' of hospitalized children. We are so thankful for being a part of you and your children's lives. Teaching the children empathy and caring for the needs of others helps to build a stronger learning community for us all.

When you have a moment, if you could please take the

Illinois 5 Essentials Survey to help with our school improvement efforts. We need at least 20% of our parents to complete the survey.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

Spring Break is three weeks away, and our student iPads are getting ready for a beach staycation, minus the beach! As we prepare for Spring Break, teachers will be collecting iPads and working with the Tech Department to again make sure iPads are updated and working. Specifically, for 4th- and 8th-grade iPads, the Tech Department will inspect those over Break as those iPads will be turned in at the end of the year for recycling. For all students, this ensures they will come back to a working iPad after break, and we hope it is one less thing you have to find on a counter at home. Starting next Friday, students will see a version of the wallpaper below, just giving them instructions for how to prepare for the Spring Break staycation. Parents, please do check to see if your child's iPad is fully updated, to 17.3 and above.

EARLY CHILDHOOD

This month the early childhood students learned about pets. The students adopted a stuffed animal pet and learned how to care for it. They named them, built them a home, fed them and played with them. The students wrote in their journal about all the fun things they did with their pet. We also practice letter recognition through puppy dog letter matching and a find the letter and write it game.

KINDERGARTEN

NEWS

Over the past two weeks, the kindergarten students have had an amazing time learning how to formulate a how-to piece. They even conducted their own how-to's explaining how to catch a Leprechaun. Once they completed their how-to writing they were given the opportunity to design and build their very own Leprechaun traps! This allowed us the opportunity to tie both our mystery science force and motion unit in with our HMH. The children explored materials, made predictions and built very clever traps. We are blown away by their writing and teamwork throughout this multi-step process.

FIRST GRADE

NEWS

The students have begun a new unit in literacy. In this unit, students are learning about the life cycles and characteristics of plant life as they read informational and procedural texts, fiction and poetry. The students are learning about a variety of plants and will be able to watch them “grow”

before their very eyes.

District Updates

On April 8, a total eclipse will be visible in the Chicagoland area. We are planning on capitalizing on this educational opportunity, within safe guidelines.  We are grateful for the support of the D23PTO who provided the necessary funding to purchase the safety glasses required for viewing the eclipse.

The following is the timeline for the total solar eclipse in the Chicagoland area:

12:51 pm Eclipse Begins

2:08 pm Max Point of the Total Eclipse

3:22 pm Eclipse Ends

Because it can be damaging to our eyes to stare directly into the sun during a total eclipse, we wanted to reach out to you to let you know our plan for that day to ensure the safety of our students and staff:

  • No recess or Physical Education during the timeframe of the total eclipse (unless the weather and cloud coverage permit)
  • We have developed a schedule that allows teachers to take their classes outside to experience the total eclipse.
  • We will supply each student with the proper protective eyewear should their class decide to go outside during the total eclipse timeframe.
  • Students MUST wear the protective eyewear in order to go outside during the total eclipse timeframe.
  • You will have an opportunity to opt your child out of that experience. Should you decide to opt your child out of that experience, they will be provided with an alternate activity.
  • We will ask all students to wear their protective glasses during dismissal and while riding the school bus home.

Opt-Out

Please email your child’s homeroom (elementary) or advisory (MacArthur) teacher should you want your child to not participate in this experience. You may also choose to arrange an early pick-up or keep your child home if you are uncomfortable with them traveling home wearing the protective glasses.

Your Help

We will speak to the students about how to responsibly experience the total eclipse and about the necessary safety precautions when going outside during a total eclipse. Talking with your child about the responsibilities of observing a solar eclipse and reinforcing wearing the protective glasses during dismissal would be helpful to further ensure the safety of our students.

Century Book Club Readers!

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.

*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!

Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!

Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.

Students will also receive a special prize from the office.

Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.

Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

Book Club PDF 2

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.

Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.
