Building a Community of Belonging

Dear Eisenhower Families

It is hard to believe that we are already finishing our 36th day of school. Seeing the change in the children from the first day of school until now is truly a wonder. The children have adjusted to new routines, challenging curriculum, rigorous learning expectations, and, most importantly, being engaged members of a classroom culture of learning.

However, it is our partnership as a school community that makes all the difference. We appreciate all of your support in developing healthy routines and habits with nightly reading and review work. As always, keep having those nightly conversations with your child about their friendships, how they feel about themselves, and if they feel engaged and a part of classroom activities, conversations, and discussions. How they feel about being a member of the classroom learning community is directly connected to their social-emotional and academic success. If they are feeling any negative feelings towards their learning or relationships, we ask that you reach out to us.

Linking your own childhood experiences of friends, school, and classroom memories is a wonderful way to stimulate a conversation and learn what is most pressing on their minds. Teaching them how to express themselves and explain what they’ve learned can be as simple as discussing what you learned or experienced that day as well. Conversations should be premised on sharing and being a reciprocal listener. It’s a wonderful skill that we impart on our children every day and one that will hopefully make the completion of getting dressed, tying their shoes, cleaning their room, and brushing their teeth a little easier as well.

Parent-Teacher Conferences November 2nd & 9th

We are looking forward to seeing everyone in person at our upcoming parent-teacher conferences on November 2nd and 9th. If for some reason you are unable to attend, please contact your child's teacher about setting up a virtual conference. Conference signups will be coming out soon.

Halloween Reminders:

The Eisenhower, Ross, Sullivan annual Halloween Costume Parades will be on Tuesday, October 31st.

The morning early childhood and morning kindergarten classes will parade outside at 10:00 A.M.

The Eisenhower school parade for PM early childhood & kindergarten, full-day kindergarten, and 1st grade classes will begin at 12:00 P.M.

If you wish to view the parades, please assemble along the parade routes.

*Eisenhower will parade from the rear of the school, along the sidewalks, and back into school through the front doors.

Every spot is a good location for pictures!

AM and PM early childhood and AM and PM kindergarten children should wear their costumes to school that day.

Full day kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade students should bring their costumes to school.

Should the weather be cold or rainy, parents may view the parade in the gym. The Eisenhower morning class parties will begin right after the morning early childhood and kindergarten parade. The afternoon class parties will begin at 1:15 P.M.  As you think about your child’s costume for our parade, please keep in mind that schools have a heightened and serious concern about students who bring weapons to school. The concern extends to toy weapons - including toy guns, squirt guns, cap guns, martial arts devices, play swords, and knives. Do not allow your child to include any weapons with the costume they bring to wear in the parade or to bring toy weapons to school at any time during the school year. Also, your child’s costume should not include any blood/gore. These guidelines by no means should curtail the fun your child can have at the parade.

PTO Reminder:

D23 Home-School Connections

Early Childhood

Early childhood students began their study of trees this month. The students learned about the various animals that live in trees and the many varieties of food that grow on trees. We also studied the different parts of a tree.  We have been practicing our counting skills by using 10 frames with acorns and utilizing the different parts of a tree to make patterns. We also enjoyed color sorting apples.

Kindergarten

The kindergarten team has just completed their first unit in the Ready Math program. The students have learned prepositions, size including length, height, and how to sort by a variety of attributes. We are looking forward to beginning our second unit working with numbers to 5.

First Grade

Students in first grade are busy learning several strategies for problem solving. They are applying these strategies to solve both addition and subtraction word problems and equations. Ask your child to share their favorite problem solving strategy.

District Updates

District 23 is Focused on Creating Communities of Belonging

We all know that stress, traumatic events, and lack of connection can complicate an already challenging situation. Whether at home or in schools, building safe, caring, compassionate, and empathetic relationships help to support students through life's ups and downs. Our focus on Creating Communities of Belonging calls us to reflect on and review our practices that welcome all students and families and engage each to grow to their fullest potential.

We are working with renowned speaker, Dr. Doug Bolton, to examine strategies that we can implement to maximize students' sense of safety and belonging in our classrooms, schools, and as a District. We also support our parent community with information and as partners to provide the love, care, and support our students need. At a recent parent workshop, Dr. Bolton encouraged parents to implement the following strategies to help build resilience in their children:

  • Slow Down - Taking time together as a family, at a meal, or some other time, provides the opportunity for connection and a buffering effect to external stressors.
  • Model Empathy - When children hear their parents process stress in a healthy way, they learn the vocabulary and empathy to do so themselves.
  • Look Upstream - Negative behaviors are the end results of issues that are often masked. When we only address the resulting behavior, especially through punishment, we often miss the opportunity to find out what's going on "upstream" that is actually causing the behavior.
  • Create Communities of Belonging - Get connected to other families and friends through church, school, or community activities that build a safety net of resources and people to whom the children may turn when they are in need of support.

For us in District 23, our professional learning this year is centered around how we can best create these supporting communities by enhancing the respectful celebration of our diversity. As educators, we welcome our students into engaging learning practices that provide differentiation to meet the range of student abilities and needs and inspire all student to grow.

Century Book Club Readers!

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.

*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!

Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!

Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.

Students will also receive a special prize from the office.

Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.

Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.

Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.
