Eisenhower Eagle Express

Engage ALL students in experiences that inspire EACH to grow as learners, individuals, and community members.

November 1st, 2024

Dear Eisenhower Families,

Our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences are our first true opportunity to sit down and reflect upon each individual child’s growth. Just as important as earning growth marks on their report cards, we are able to discuss their social-emotional progress as well as their classroom participation, focus and level of enthusiasm. Even though assessment data, homework and in-class assignments play crucial roles in understanding each and every child’s learning development, we always want to make sure that our conversations focus around several fundamental questions that you might want to consider asking:

1) Is my child having positive interactions with classmates and developing friendships?

2) Does my child like to participate in whole class discussions and share ideas

in small group settings?

3) What are some additional strategies that we can reinforce at home to help

our child attain specific concept(s) and skill(s) development?

As we foster these conversations, you will find your relationship with your own child’s learning growing. Equally as valuable is the insight it gives our dedicated staff in continuing to nurture your child’s path of lifelong learning.

Also, please remember to read with your child for at least 20-minutes each night. While reading or even sharing conversations, remember to introduce or substitute unfamiliar vocabulary words for everyday common words. Enhance your conversations by speaking to your child with robust, enriching words. Not only will you find them developing more expressive language in the process, which will help to facilitate greater understanding of their social-emotional well-being, but you will unknowingly be doing yourself a far greater favor for your relationship with them when their later adolescent years are upon you.

Some of you may have noticed some updated procedures in the nurse's office regarding medication management in your school.  These procedures further promote the health and safety of students in compliance with the Illinois School Code and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.  The complete procedures will be sent to impacted families as well as shared through upcoming principal newsletters.  A few of the updates include:

  • Medication will no longer be accepted by the school office staff, nor through your child’s backpack.

  • Medication will need to be dropped off through an appointment with the nurse.

  • All controlled medications will need to be counted by the parent in front of the nurse, and then counted by the nurse in front of the parent, and then also counted by a third person (another nurse or administrator) in front of the parent.  This is why an appointment is necessary for medication drop off.

Your school nurse will be reaching out to connect with parents who are impacted by these changes.  If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school nurse.

Teachers will be collecting all student iPads before students leave for November Break. We are pushing out special wallpaper to students to prepare them for leaving their iPads. See below for the fun wallpaper our teachers and the Tech Department created together to make this fun for students! (Wallpapers coming!)

This gives our teachers, before and after break, an opportunity to review with students safe and expected use of the district-owned iPads. For our students, this supports our goal of truly making this a break from school. They have worked hard through Trimester I, and as we all need breaks, we know it is healthy and needed for our students to get one too!

With that, we need your help with two things to prepare for the iPad collection:

1. Students should have their iPads updated to the latest update available. Please work with your student to update the iPad this weekend. The iPad should be connected to WiFi and power.

2. If you will be leaving early for November Break, please have your student leave the iPad with the teacher.

Thanks for your help and support so we can make sure students have the tools they need to learn when we return!

Early Childhood News

Our early childhood students wrapped up their tree study and learned so much about trees! We explored the various types of food that come from trees and how to care for them. The students had a great time using sticks to form letters,

writing in their journals about the foods that come from trees,

and enjoying a fun tree letter matching game.

Kindergarten News

Our kindergartens had a blast turning up their learning during our haunted house day. All kindergarteners are in full swing of learning their high frequency words. We are now taking it one step further and beginning to put their words together, in order to read simple sentences. Therefore, we introduced our first reader's theater (partner reading with character lines). They were spooktastic!

First Grade News

Students have been learning about animals through fiction and non-fiction texts. They are learning about the various characteristics of animals that allow them to grow and survive in the natural world. They are also learning about the different kinds of structures animals build for homes and protection. Ask your child to share what they have learned about animals.

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.

*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!

Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!

Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.

Students will also receive a special prize from the office.

Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.

Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.

Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.
