Dear Eisenhower Families,
As I write, I just wanted to remind all of our families that we have begun our second trimester of learning. Academic achievement and social-emotional growth are both occurring because the children are engaged and being nurtured. More importantly, growth is occurring because the children have advocates in both you and us. We all share in a partnership in seeing the children grow, and what an exciting endeavor it is to see! It gives all of our lives purpose and their future hope and promise. However, now more than ever, as learning demands increase, we continue to ask for your support with ensuring that homework review and reading time with your child continue to be scheduled on a nightly basis. Over the next nine days of the Thanksgiving Break, we ask that you please continue the outstanding family time habits of sharing stories and reading with your child(ren).
We hope everyone has a Wonderful Thanksgiving Break!
Your Eisenhower Family

Update from the Nurse’s Office
Some of you may have noticed some updated procedures in the nurse's office regarding medication management in your school. These procedures further promote the health and safety of students in compliance with the Illinois School Code and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The complete procedures will be sent to impacted families as well as shared through upcoming principal newsletters. A few of the updates include:
- Medication will no longer be accepted by the school office staff, nor through your child’s backpack.
- Medication will need to be dropped off through an appointment with the nurse.
- All controlled medications will need to be counted by the parent in front of the nurse, and then counted by the nurse in front of the parent, and then also counted by a third person (another nurse or administrator) in front of the parent. This is why an appointment is necessary for medication drop off.
Your school nurse will be reaching out to connect with parents who are impacted by these changes. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school nurse.
Update on PowerSchool
For those who use the PowerSchool app, yesterday (Thursday) morning, you may have received some notification from PowerSchool that said “Test.” Sure enough, they were testing something. That was a glitch on PowerSchool’s end. See their note to customers about this. Given that these notifications were unexpected, we just wanted to share this clarification from PowerSchool.

Early Childhood News
The early childhood students wrapped up their bread study this week. They explored the process of bread-making, the tools used, and the people who work with bread. The past three weeks have been filled with hands-on activities, including looking at recipes and baking different types of bread. The children also practiced writing letters in salt and had fun sorting various breads by clapping out the syllables in their names.

Kindergarten News
Our kindergarten's are focusing on making predictions in text. This week we focused our attention on the story "Turkey Trouble". In this story Turkey is concerned he will become the main course. Throughout the story he disguises himself as different animals on the farm. Our students did a wonderful job predicting what animal he may be dressed up as next. They then took it one step further and created their own disguise for Turkey to keep him safe.

First Grade News
First grade students have been learning why it is important to do their best and get along with others. They are reading books about people and characters who practice hard and learn to play fair, because we are better together when we are kind to one another. Children are also learning how to make friends. Ask your child to share how they are a good citizen.

The Principal's Century Book Club is a listing of children who read multiples of one hundred books during their years at Eisenhower School.
*Books can be read by parents or enjoy a shared reading with your child. Take turns, use voices, and, most importantly, have fun!
Remember to ask plenty of comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words!
Your child’s name will be added to the front foyer wall when they read their first one hundred books. Their name continues to be added with each 100 books they read.
Students will also receive a special prize from the office.
Books should be at the child’s reading level, and left to parent’s discretion.
Below, is a link to a form that you can download and print.

You may also list the books on a sheet of paper.
Setting aside 20-minutes a night for family reading with or to your child makes a world of difference.

As we enter the winter months, we would like to update you on some of the factors that contribute to decisions related to closing school in the event of inclement weather, when you can expect to be notified, and indoor/outdoor recess guidelines.
Over the course of the past year, we have been engaged in collaborative discussions with District 214 as well as our neighboring districts. Together, we are committed to a process that ensures decisions are made wisely and in a timely fashion regarding the safety and well-being of our entire school community.
District 23 has an approved e-Learning Plan on file which allows us to close schools, but maintain a day of attendance through the use of remote instruction. The specific circumstances of each weather event, especially timing, will influence the use of e-Learning Days or the full closure of schools and programming.
Prospect Heights 23 will follow these general guidelines when shifting to e-Learning or closing schools for winter-related closings:
- Schools will be closed if there is a forecasted sustained wind chill of -30 degrees Fahrenheit or colder, or when the actual temperature is a sustained -15 degrees Fahrenheit or colder between the travel times of 5:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and/or 2:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. The District will use forecasts provided by the National Weather Service.
- For snow, ice, or other weather-related closings, the District will monitor the current conditions, the forecasted conditions between the travel times listed above, the ability of our staff to plow parking lots and sidewalks, as well as the ability of local municipalities to plow and make streets passable. The District will also be in contact with our transportation company to assess their ability to safely run buses. Lastly, we will consult with our neighboring districts and local police departments.
- If the District is able to make the determination to shift to e-Learning or close school the night before, we will contact you between 6:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. If the decision cannot be made the night before, we will make the notification by 5:30 a.m. the day of the closing knowing that you may need to arrange for childcare or other schedule changes.
Prospect Heights 23 will inform students, families, and staff via the following methods:
- The District will utilize our automated phone and email system to notify families of weather-related shifts, closures or cancellations until 9:30 p.m. Typically, we do not send out a telephone notice after 9:30 p.m.
- However, in the event the decision to close school is made after 9:30 p.m., the District will wait and send out the telephone notice by 5:30 a.m. the following morning.
The District will update its website (www.d23.org), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/PHSD23) and the Emergency Closing Center website (www.emergencyclosingcenter.com) as soon as a decision has been made. These sites will be updated in real-time as a decision is made.
Prospect Heights 23 will follow these general guidelines regarding indoor/outdoor recess:
- Elementary students have outdoor recess whenever possible. Students perform better when they get outdoors, even if only for a few minutes.
- Outdoor Recess: 10 degrees F and higher (including wind chill)
- Inside Recess: below 10 degrees F (including wind chill)
Students must have boots, gloves and snow pants to play in the snow. Those who don’t must stay on the blacktop area. Parents should assist children in preparing and wearing appropriate clothing for the weather conditions.
As always, the safety and security of our students and staff remain a top priority of PHSD23, our high school district, and our community. The building principal and central office administration will make all decisions regarding weather-related shifts to e-Learning, closure or cancellation of activities. It is important to remind you that Illinois School Code and District policy allows parents to call their student(s) out as excused in the event that the district keeps schools open because, as a family, you have concerns about your child safely traveling to or from school.
Sincerely,
Donald S. Angelaccio, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
