On Saturday, Trump moved to deploy the National Guard by authorizing 300 troops to protect federal officers and assets in Chicago. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson confirmed that the president authorized using the Illinois National Guard members, citing what she called “ongoing violent riots and lawlessness” that local leaders have not quelled.

The lawsuit alleges that “these advances in President Trump’s long-declared ‘War’ on Chicago and Illinois are unlawful and dangerous.”

“The American people, regardless of where they reside, should not live under the threat of occupation by the United States military, particularly not simply because their city or state leadership has fallen out of a president’s favor,” the lawsuit says.

Pritzker said the potential deployment amounted to “Trump’s invasion” and called on Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to block it. Abbott pushed back and said the crackdown was needed to protect federal workers who are in the city as part of the president’s increased immigration enforcement.

White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson confirmed in a weekend statement that Trump authorized using Illinois National Guard members, citing what she called “ongoing violent riots and lawlessness” that local leaders have not quelled.

In a separate move, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said he signed an executive order barring federal immigration agents and others from using city-owned property, such as parking lots, garages and vacant lots, as staging areas for enforcement operations.

Johnson also joined the news conference that started at 2:15 p.m., along with Attorney General Kwame Raoul and U.S. Rep. Chuy Garcia, and more elected officials.

Town Hall - Your Help Is Needed

Delegate Paul Krizek (16th District ) and Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (34th district ) are hosting a town hall at an undisclosed location aimed at the Hispanic community living in the Route 1 area on October 16, 2025 @ 6 pm.

They will discuss mobile home legislation at the state level, ICE activities and how to respond, small business assistance, job training opportunities, and anything else the community members wish to discuss.

Spanish interpreters will be on site for anyone who needs translation services and they will be serving refreshments. 



In order to not attract attention from ICE, they are not publicly advertising the event, and instead, are relying on community partners including the Latino Caucus to help spread the word by mouth.

Apple and Google block apps that crowdsource ICE sightings. Some warn of chilling effects.

Apple and Google blocked downloads of phone apps that flag sightings of U.S. immigration agents, just hours after the Trump administration demanded that one particularly popular iPhone app be taken down.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said such tracking puts Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at risk. But users and developers of the apps say it’s their First Amendment right to capture what ICE is doing in their neighborhoods — and maintain that most users turn to these platforms in an effort to protect their own safety as President Donald Trump steps up aggressive immigration enforcement across the country.

ICEBlock, the most widely used of the ICE-tracking apps in Apple’s app store, is among the apps that have been taken down. Bondi said her office reached out to Apple on Thursday “demanding that they remove ICEBlock” and claiming that it “is designed to put ICE agents at risk just for doing their jobs.”

Apple soon complied, sending an email Thursday to the app’s creator, Joshua Aaron, that said it would block further downloads of the app because new information “provided to Apple by law enforcement” showed the app broke the app store rules.

According to the email, which Aaron shared with The Associated Press, Apple said the app violated the company’s policies “because its purpose is to provide location information about law enforcement officers that can be used to harm such officers individually or as a group.”

In a Friday interview, Aaron decried the company for bending to what he described as “an authoritarian regime.” And immigration rights advocates like Kica Matos, president of the National Immigration Law Center, added that these actions marked “a disturbing example of how tech companies are capitulating to Trump.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson continued to blame Democrats for the government shutdown, using misleading Republican talking points that insist that Democratic leadership is pushing to fund health care for undocumented immigrants.

Johnson said Sunday on CBS’s Face the Nation that Democrats “want to spend $1.5 trillion, and they want to return hard-working taxpayer dollars to fund health care for illegal aliens. It is in their bill. Go to speaker.gov and see it for yourself. Page 57, Section 2141. They’re using this for political games, and it is shameful, and real people are getting hurt.”

“I have looked at that text,” host Margaret Brennan replied. “It doesn’t explicitly say what you are indicating.”

We went to the Speaker’s site, which links to the Democratic proposal. The specific section Johnson mentioned — section 2141 on page 57 — repeals the changes to Medicaid made by Trump and the Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Brennan’s pushback got Johnson to admit that he’s not just talking about “illegal aliens” but also non-citizens, as in people here legally. It’s an important distinction.

“It’s a compelling talking point to say that Democrats want to provide health care to undocumented immigrants, but it’s just not true in terms of the cuts they’re trying to reverse,” Larry Levitt, executive vice president for health policy at KFF, a nonprofit and nonpartisan health policy information organization, told the Associated Press.

It’s important to note that undocumented immigrants broadly do not qualify for Medicaid, Affordable Care Act subsidies, or other federally-funded health care coverage.

“Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for federally-funded health coverage,” Drishti Pillai, director of Immigrant Health Policy at KFF, wrote. “The GOP’s Big Beautiful Bill didn’t change that. Overturning the health care provisions in the law won’t either.”

Further, under the OBBBA, many lawfully present immigrants who are eligible for Medicaid — such as asylum seekers, refugees, and survivors of human trafficking — will be rendered ineligible for the program in 2026 thanks to a section of the law titled “Alien Medicaid eligibility.” If that provision stays in place, then next year, approximately 1.4 million immigrants lawfully in the U.S. will lose health coverage because Republicans severely restricted access to lawful permanent residents, Cuban and Haitian immigrants, and citizens of the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Palau. Democrats are pressing to reverse that.

Johnson also claimed on NBC’s Meet the Press: “What the Democrats are demanding is that illegal aliens that care for them in an emergency room should be reimbursed at a higher rate.”

Hospitals may be reimbursed for emergency room care given to undocumented immigrants due to a Reagan-era law (the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act) that requires emergency rooms provide screening exams and stabilization care to everyone who comes through their doors seeking care, regardless of immigration status. Under the OBBBA, those reimbursements will decrease. Hospitals would still be obligated to deliver care to everyone, but they will not receive the same amount as they would have before OBBBA, also known as H.R. 1.
