From Fiesta DC to PBS:

Honoring Hispanic Heritage Against the Odds

Hispanic Heritage Month should be a season of pride, not paranoia. From September 15 to October 15, the nation is meant to recognize the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Instead, fear of ICE raids and the government’s escalating immigration crackdowns have cast a shadow over what should be a celebration of identity. Communities are being forced to choose between joy and safety, and that choice itself is a political statement.

Fiesta DC in Washington tells the story. Attendance was smaller than in years past, not because people no longer care, but because families weigh the risk of being visible. Yet the festival still pulsed with life—music blaring, dancers swirling in traditional dress, and children waving flags. Those who showed up sent a message: culture is stronger than intimidation.

For those who stayed home, the Hispanic Heritage Awards on PBS offered another kind of resistance. Watching from living rooms may seem quieter, but it is still an act of defiance. Tuning in, gathering with family, and celebrating heritage—even privately—pushes back against the politics of fear that thrive on silence.

Numbers matter in politics, but when it comes to cultural survival, they don’t tell the full story. A smaller crowd at Fiesta DC doesn’t signal defeat; it signals resilience under siege. Hispanic Heritage Month is not about filling streets but about refusing erasure.

Let’s be clear: fear is a weapon. When the government makes people too afraid to attend a cultural festival, that’s not just policy—it’s suppression. The antidote is visibility, dignity, and persistence. Whether on the streets or on PBS, Hispanic Heritage Month continues, and that continuation is itself an act of resistance.

BAD BUNNY TO HEADLINE 2026 SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW

Bad Bunny has secured one of the biggest gigs in music: The 2026 Super Bowl LX halftime show.

Roc Nation, the NFL, and Apple Music announced that the Puerto Rican superstar will take center stage at the big game during halftime of the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers game Sunday, Sept. 28. Bad Bunny also shared a short video on Instagram, in which he sits perched upon a goalpost planted on the beach while his song “Callaita” plays.

“What I’m feeling goes beyond myself,” Bad Bunny said in a statement. “It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history. Ve y dile a tu abuela, que seremos el HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL.”

Notably, though, Bad Bunny is currently not scheduled to play any shows inside the United States this year or next — meaning his Super Bowl Halftime Show will take on added significance. The musician pointedly chose not to take the Debí Tirar Más Fotos tour to the United States in part because of concerns that his concerts might be targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 

“But there was the issue of — like, fucking ICE could be outside [my concert],” he told i-D. “And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”

The star seemed to reference his past comments in a post on X following the Super Bowl LX announcement. “After speaking with my team, I think I’ll do just one show in the United States,” he wrote in Spanish.

On top of all his music, Bad Bunny has also appeared in two movies this year, Happy Gilmore 2 with Adam Sandler, and Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing. He’s also set host the Season 51 premiere of Saturday Night Live on Oct. 4, with Doja Cat serving as musical guest.

Bad Bunny follows recent Super Bowl halftime performers Kendrick Lamar last year, Usher in 2024, Rihanna in 2023, Dr. Dre and guests Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Lamar in Los Angeles in 2022, the Weeknd in 2021, and Shakira and Jennifer Lopez in 2020.
