Canek Aguirre

Member, Alexandria Council

Canek Aguirre was first elected to the Alexandria City Council in November 2018 and re-elected to a third term in 2024. He is the first Latino to ever serve on the Alexandria City Council. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Canek is the son of Mexican immigrants, and he knows first-hand the importance of hard work, education, and ensuring everyone has a fair shot at the American Dream.

Former Venezuelan Congressman is in the Race to Succeed Rep. Gerry Connolly

Leopoldo Martínez, a former member of Venezuela’s National Assembly and a resident of McLean, is a candidate for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, aiming to succeed Rep. Gerry Connolly. Martínez, elected in 2000 to represent the state of Miranda in Venesuela, held leadership roles in the opposition to then-President Hugo Chavez. He left Venezuela in 2004, citing political persecution for his criticism of the Chavez regime.

“I came to this country after defending democracy in Venezuela,” Martínez said. “Now I’m running for Congress because those same values are under attack here at home.” He cited threats from Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and MAGA Republicans as motivations for his campaign.

In the U.S., Martínez has worked as a tax lawyer, political consultant, and advocate for Latino political participation. He founded the Center for Democracy and Development in the Americas and was the founding chair of the Latino Victory Project. He also served as a small business commissioner under Virginia governors Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam.

President Joe Biden nominated him in 2021 to lead the Inter-American Development Bank, but Senate Republican Ted Cruz blocked the appointment.
