Is Anyone Really Surprised?
Within hours of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the new administration took down the Spanish-language version of the official White House website.
The site — https://www.whitehouse.gov/es/ — now gives users an “Error 404” message. The Spanish profile of the White House’ X, @LaCasaBlanca was also removed. Meanwhile, the Spanish versions of other government agencies such as the Department of Agriculture remain available.

Shame on the Democrats Who Voted for the Laken Riley Act
In a stunning and shameful display of political cowardice, 12 Senate Democrats and 37 House Democrats broke ranks to support the Republican-led Laken Riley Act—a bill that exploits tragedy to push a hardline anti-immigrant agenda. Named after a young woman whose murder was allegedly committed by an undocumented immigrant, the legislation weaponizes grief to justify cruel, sweeping crackdowns that do nothing to address the root causes of crime or improve public safety.
Let’s be clear: violent crime is abhorrent, and every victim deserves justice. But the Laken Riley Act isn’t about justice—it’s about fearmongering. By mandating that state and local law enforcement comply with ICE detainers, the bill erodes trust between immigrant communities and police, making cities less safe. It perpetuates the false narrative that undocumented immigrants are inherently dangerous, despite overwhelming evidence showing they commit crimes at lower rates than U.S. citizens.
President Trump signed amendments to the Laken Riley Act into law on Jan. 29, requiring the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain individuals unlawfully present in the United States who have been charged with, arrested for, convicted of, or have admitted to having committed acts of burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting.
So now, an undocumented immigrant who has taken a treacherous trip to escape violence or poverty, who has contributed to our community, and who may even have children who are citizens, can be shipped off to Guantanamo simply because they were accused of shoplifting—perhaps mistakenly or due to racial bias—without any due process of a court proceeding? It seems that the days when our Constitution protected everyone in the country are behind us.
Courage in politics means standing up for what is right, even when it’s unpopular. Those who sided with Republicans on this bill should reflect on the damage they’ve done—to immigrant communities, to Democratic values, and to the truth itself.

(CNN) — El Salvador has agreed to house violent US criminals and receive deportees of any nationality, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday, in an unprecedented – and legally problematic deal – that has alarmed critics and rights groups.
Rubio unveiled the agreement after meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, as part of a tour of several Central American countries intended to consolidate regional support for the Trump administration’s immigration policy.

Patrick Wilson summarized our candidate for Governor pretty well in a 2018 Richmond Times Dispatch article during her run for Congress:
Abigail Spanberger was fascinated as a child listening to her Ecuadorian babysitter speaking Spanish to her grandchildren.
Spanberger studied Spanish on her own and at age 7, wrote a diary in code, creating new words and secret words for the name of a younger sister.
If you think that sounds like a recipe for a future Central Intelligence Agency officer, you guessed correctly.
Spanberger learned to speak Spanish, French, German and some Italian and spent 8½ years in the CIA working in a secret job both overseas and at home that later stunned her friends when they found out about it.
“I was in positions that I would never want my daughters to put themselves in,” she said. “But I always felt very much in control.”
