Farmers across Australia are anxiously watching long-term climate forecasts, with fears a hot and dry El Niño system could back up the current flood-inducing La Niña. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has advised that 40 per cent of past La Niña events have switched to El Niño events in the same year that a La Niña has ended.
Sorry to start off on a negative note but it’s important to know so we can plan for what’s coming.

Clare Valley's Grosset Wines trial new technology, Enseal, to combat international wine fraud
Producers are trialling technology aimed at reassuring consumers the wine they are drinking is, in fact, the wine they have purchased. South Australia's Grosset Wines owner Jeffrey Grosset has founded Enseal — a product designed to combat wine fraud, which he says is a significant issue in the industry.

Authorities are urging people to be vigilant about mosquito-borne diseases after the first Victorian case of Japanese encephalitis this season was identified last month. The case was detected in the Campaspe LGA, which included the flood-affected communities of Echuca and Rochester.

180,000 Fee-Free TAFE courses now available | |

Australians can now take advantage of a range of Fee-Free TAFE courses, providing access to skills needed for jobs across a range of industries, including agriculture.
Fee-Free TAFE will deliver 180,000 TAFE and vocational education places across Australia in 2023, allowing eligible Australians to study an accredited diploma, certificate or short course in a range of
fast-growing industries needing skilled workers.

Farm safety online program 2023 | | |

A series of online Farm Safety workshops is being held across the country, based on Federal legislation and nuanced to each state/territory's legislation. The workshops are tailored to the four largest agricultural industries: broadacre, horticulture, viticulture and livestock.
The program is targeted at farm business owners, with the aim of developing farm safety plans, and comprises two morning workshops (approx. two weeks apart) followed by two 60-minute coaching sessions held within the following month.
The workshops will run in all states, with initial workshops held on various dates between 1 February and 23 May. Run by Rural Edge and sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, the program is free for all participants.

International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savantes program returns to Melbourne | | |

After a hiatus enforced by the COVID pandemic, the International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savantes program is re-commencing in Melbourne on 16-17 March.
Based around objective evaluation of extra virgin olive oil as a food ingredient, the Savantes tasting approach is the result of 20 years of international participation and evolution. The Melbourne course will also introduce the new Savantes Savourgram, an innovative method of assessing and recording the flavour profile of olive oils using evocative colour associations with food.

Feedback sought on EU-NZ GI protection
New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is calling for submissions on amended versions of EU member country names to be protected as geographical indications (GI) in New Zealand under the EU-NZ FTA.
This will see around 2000 EU GIs protected in New Zealand, while the EU will protect New Zealand’s existing wine GIs. Current NZ GI laws will also be amended.
Among the GIs to be protected are two related to olives: Elia Kalamatas, under the Table and processed olives category; and Kalamata, under the Oil and animal fats category. Protection of these terms will prohibit their use by New Zealand producers.

Italy’s recently-appointed minister of business has said the government would earmark funds in its proposed budget to create a mobile application to counter Nutri-Score. The app aims to promote and defend traditional food products with the Made in Italy certification.
