Feedback Wanted! PTA Community Survey - Fall 2017

Spanish Outside of School (SOS) Program
Apply Now for 2017-2018!
For the 2017-18 school year, there are three, 6-week sessions of Spanish Outside of School (SOS) planned for 3rd-5th graders. SOS will meet on Wednesdays, from 1:15pm to 3pm. Participation will be fully supported by the PTA! For more information and to apply, please visit the PTA Website SOS page.

You will be notified by email after 10/4 whether your child has a spot in a session or is placed on a waiting list. Children of parents who help run the SOS program can participate automatically! Please contact if questions and to volunteer.

The First Passport Check Day of 2017-18 is 9/28!
Thursday, 9/28 in the Puesta del Sol Library
The Passport Club information and schedule was distributed to 1st - 5th grade teachers last week and was sent home with students. Check the September map for what students will be quizzed on, based on level.

Special Itinerary for September is the continents. Print a worksheet and check the bulletin board in the gym for answers. Then bring completed worksheet on the 28th for a stamp and small prize.

We're always looking for volunteers to assist with our Check Days!

If you are a PTA member and are interested in attending the WSPTA Legislative Assembly 10/21-22 in Tacoma, please email no later than Friday, 9/29. Our local PTA can send up to 7 voting delegates.

Watch D.O.G.S Kickoff at Walkathon
Friday, 10/6 @ 5pm in the Puesta del Sol Gym  
Hey dads! Watch D.O.G.S. is a national program that fosters involvement of dads and father figures in schools. We're kicking off the 2017-2018 Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) season for Puesta Del Sol at Walkathon so that you don't have to find time for another after-hours event later. You were already coming to Walkathon, RIGHT? Bring your tacos from the food truck, learn more about the Watch D.O.G.S., and sign up for a Watch D.O.G.S. day at school. We promise to keep it to 15 minutes so you can get back to Walkathon and your families ASAP!
Walkathon Bake Sale Items Needed!
We are in need of baked goods, packaged candy or snacks for this year's Walkathon on Friday, 10/6.
No peanuts or tree nuts please. Items need to be individually wrapped (baggies are fine) and will be sold for $1. Items can be dropped off in the main office any time after 10/2 or at the Bake Sale table on 10/6.

Dia de Los Muertos Sugar Skull Fundraiser
Friday, 10/6 at the Puesta del Sol Walkathon. $3.00 cash each, all proceeds will go to the Puesta del Sol PTA.
Girl Scout Troop 44202 will be selling Dia de los Muertos sugar skulls and taking orders for additional sugar skulls at the Walkathon. This fundraiser is part of a community service and business learning project for the troop, Sugar Skulls will be delivered in late October. If you have any questions please email

REGISTER: Please let us know where to send your child after school on 10/6. Online registration closes 10/4. Classes with 100% RSVP by 10/2 will receive a coupon for a PTA designated treat at the Bake Sale table.

VOLUNTEER: We need lots of volunteers to make this event happen. Please consider volunteering before, during, or after the event.

PTA After School Programs are BACK!
This year the PTA is sponsoring some returning favorites, as well as new additions!
Our After School programs teach music, drumming and dance from Spain, Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa.  These classes offer our students an opportunity to expand their appreciation of culture and diversity, all taught in Spanish!

  • Flamenco on Thursdays
  • Bomba del Sol on Fridays
  • NEW! Salsa/Hip Hop on Fridays

2017 Reflections Art Theme: "Within Reach"
Entries due Friday, 10/27
Reflections is a national art competition that is sponsored by the PTA. This year's theme is "Within Reach" and entries can be made using multiple artful expressions (literature, film, visual art, photography, music and dance). Entries are due by Friday, 10/27 in the school office. Please see the PTA Reflections web page on how to enter, general rules, common disqualifiers and important dates.  The online registration page and official form will be available in October. 
Club del Libro Familiar en Espanol - Family Book Club in Spanish
Begins Tuesday, 9/26 @ 5:30pm at Lake Hills Library.

Welcome to Puesta del Sol, Kylie!
A big welcome to Kylie Takashima, our new 4th grade teacher! 

Kylie has a double major degree in elementary education and Spanish. She has taught int ernationally, as well as in a bilingual program in IL. Kylie and her husband have traveled extensively through Central and South America, even making films for NGOs. She loves the sunny outdoors, as well as baking and cooking. The 4th grade team reports that Kylie "demonstrates a team player attitude and consistently has a smile," and that she is "enthusiastic and positive" about teaching at Puesta del Sol. We wish you a great year! 

SITA (Spanish Immersion through the Arts) is looking for volunteers!

Food Bus Pick-Up
Friday afternoons from Sept - June, 1-4pm
Did you know that our kids support a food donation program at school, benefiting Eastside families in need? They do! And you can help support their great work by getting involved with the Food Bus. We just need an hour of your time to pack up the food and deliver to Hopelink. There are lots of open time slots . Please email with any questions.

Puesta del Sol Gym

Save the date! Join your friends in putting on Puesta del Sol's annual musical. First 50 4th and 5th graders to sign up get a part! Auditions for "Just Another Day in Wonderland" are coming up 11/20-21. First mandatory all cast rehearsal is the MONDAY after Thanksgiving so plan ahead to be home in time. Cast members need to be available at least 2 days/week for rehearsal M, Tu, Th, F and make all mandatory dates. Got conflicts? We cast around them!
