It’s Election Day here in New Jersey and in states around the country, so keep your eye on CAWP for results for women candidates in today’s contests. Will women in New Jersey and Virginia gain representation in the states’ legislatures…or lose it? Will historic firsts be made for statewide elective offices in Kentucky and Mississippi? Will Philadelphia elect its first woman mayor? Find out with CAWP election coverage on our website and via Twitter. Here are some key CAWP resources to follow today’s races:

CAWP senior scholar and lead author Kira Sanbonmatsu presents results from the most recent report in the CAWP Women, Money, and Politics Series, and she is then joined by political strategists and fundraising experts Larissa Martinez and Kimberly Peeler-Allen for a discussion moderated by Errin Haines, editor-at-large at The 19th*. Traveling to the 2023 New Jersey League of Municipalities Annual Conference? Join CAWP on Wednesday, November 15th at 3:45pm in room 302 ACC as we present research from our Data to Diversity project about demographic information on New Jersey’s elected and appointed officeholders. CAWP will launch the second half of this project, which covers the demographics of appointees to state boards and commissions, to coincide with this event. Panelists will discuss findings from this report as well as the first report from the project, which focused on the demographics of elected officials. The conversation will explore the ethical value of ensuring greater participation among citizens as well as efforts to close the gap in gender and racial inequities in government. The panel will be moderated by CAWP Associate Director Jean Sinzdak and will include Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Assemblywoman Aura Dunn, Monmouth County Clerk Christine Hanlon, Laura Matos of Latina Civic PAC, and Middlesex Commissioner Shanti Narra.

Our colleagues at Eagleton are pleased to present the Albert J. Holland Lecture with Professor Saladin Ambar and political theorist Professor Danielle Allen. They will hold a fireside discussion about “How AI Fails Us: Exploring the Ethics of AI and Social Media” on Wednesday, November 15th at 7pm at Trayes Hall at the Douglass Student Center. Professor Allen serves as director of the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University and is a seasoned leader, policy and public affairs expert, and distinguished academic and author. On Saturday, November 18th at 1pm ET, the New Jersey Historical Society will host the opening of the exhibit, Stronger Than Steel: The Wynona Lipman Story, which showcases the impact Senator Wynona Lipman had on New Jersey as the state’s first Black woman state senator. The opening will be followed by a talk and book signing by April D. Ryan, Washington bureau chief for The Griot, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Ryan has decades of experience as a White House correspondent, and she is the author, most recently, of Black Women Will Save the World: An Anthem. She also served as CAWP’s Senator Wynona Lipman Chair from 2017-2018; view her Lipman Chair lecture, “The Presidency in Black and White: My Up-Close View of the White House and Race in America,” on the CAWP YouTube page.
