On this election day, may this prayer written by Jonathan Lee Walton, President of Princeton Theological Seminary, anchor us in the presence of the holy and may we find peace:
Almighty God, Source of all wisdom and justice, we gather today on this election day marked by anticipation, anxiety, and excitement. We thank You for the gift of democracy and the opportunity for every voice to be heard. We are reminded of the sacred responsibility entrusted to each citizen—the chance to shape the future through participation, civic engagement, and thoughtful discernment.
We confess, Lord, that even in this gift, we see only in part. We acknowledge that our hopes and visions, our plans and ideals, are limited and incomplete. Thus, we need Your grace, Your love, and Your forgiveness just as we must extend grace, love, and forgiveness toward one another.
Grant us humility, O God, to see through the dim glass of our human understanding. When passions rise and differences seem insurmountable, let us remember that our first and highest calling is to love—to love You and to love one another as we love ourselves. Help us to live into this call, to see beyond the divisions and to honor the humanity in all Your children.
We place our trust not in the power of empires or the authority of earthly rulers, but in You, our ultimate Redeemer. We pray for peace in a world often consumed by strife. We pray for compassion in a world often defined by contention. With reverence and resolve, we entrust this time and this nation into Your hands.
In the name of Your Son Jesus, the Christ.
Amen.
