St. Johns County Election News and Updates                    April 2022

We recently completed the process of redrawing precinct lines to reflect the redistricting process. The next step, as required by law, is for the Supervisor of Elections to request that the new precinct lines be approved by the Board of County Commissioners. I’m scheduled to appear before the Board on May 3 to request that approval. Once our new precinct lines are approved, they will be effective immediately and we will release the new precinct maps to the media and place them on our website and social media.

New precinct lines will also drive the need to update polling places. We hope to have those confirmed by May 3 so we can release them along with the new precinct lines. In addition, we anticipate mailing new voter information cards to all registered voters in early June. However, a court decision regarding Florida’s congressional districts must be made before the database of new districts can be completed and the mailing of voter information cards can occur. Additionally, the voter lookup tool on our website will not be updated with new districts, precincts, and polling places until congressional districts are finalized.

We will notify voters when the new voter information cards are going in the mail and the new information is available on our website for viewing. Updated voter information cards will reflect the new districts, precincts, and election day polling places. All voters are advised to review their new voter information cards carefully as many precincts and election day polling places have changed.

Update Your Voter Registration for the 2022 Primary and General Elections

It is very important to keep your address up-to-date with the Supervisor of Elections Office. Voter information cards are sent as “return service requested”, which means if you move and have your mail forwarded, your card will not be sent to your new address. It will be returned to the Elections Office. Returned voter information cards with associated forwarding addresses provided by USPS are processed in this manner:

Address change within St. Johns County – your address is updated and a new voter information card is sent to your new address.

Address changes within the State of Florida – your voter registration record and new address are sent to the county elections office for your new residence. Your record will be updated and you will receive a voter information card from the Elections Office in your new county notifying you of your district, precinct, and polling place.

Address changes outside the State of Florida – your voter record will be updated with the out-of-state address as your mailing address. You will be sent a list maintenance notice following the election requesting your record be updated which you can use to cancel your Florida Voter registration or provide the correct information.

Notice returned as undeliverable with no address provided - voter is sent a list maintenance card following the election which the voter can use to cancel or provide correct information.

Per state law, if you have a vote-by-mail ballot request on file with the Supervisor of Elections Office and your voter information card is returned to us as undeliverable, your vote-by-mail ballot request is cancelled. You must reapply with your new address if you wish to continue voting by mail. Contact our office at 904-823-2238 or visit our website at votesjc.gov for information about updating your voter registration information.

Working in Partnership with the Sheriff's Office to Ensure Safe Elections

It was great to meet with our Clerks and Assistant Clerks recently as we prepare to kickoff the 2022 election season. Several of our workers had expressed concerns about the headlines in the news lately regarding threats to election workers and wondering if our office would be taking any action.

Recently the FBI launched a task force to combat threats against election workers. “The FBI will not tolerate threats against any federal, state or local election workers participating in the common goal of safeguarding our electoral process and the rights of voters,” said FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate. Local contacts have been provided to the FBI field office in Jacksonville and our partners at Homeland Security.

I reached out to Sheriff Hardwick and his team to begin the discussion on keeping our workers and voters safe during this year's elections. Upon his recommendation, I met with Lt. George Harrigan in the Investigations Unit who offered us a tour of the new Sheriffs Office Training Center. Of course we took him up on the offer and Tina and I scheduled a tour. Wow – is all I can really say about all I learned during the tour of the Training Center and Investigations Unit. It was great to get a behind the scenes look at the technology and tools law enforcement have in place in order to keep our community safe.

After learning about the Investigations Unit and how the newest technology assists law enforcement, I asked Lt. Harrigan to address our Clerk and Asst. Clerks directly to inform them on some plans that we were already making and the newest technology and tools available. Our Clerks were very grateful to learn more about how the men and women of our law enforcement work every day to keep our community safe, and extra measures would be put in place this year to keep our workers and voters safe during the elections. We heard the Sheriff's Office message loud and clear – they have our backs!

Our poll deputes will be trained at the new Sheriffs Office Training Center and they will be given new updated training for the fall elections. We are grateful for the partnership of not only local law enforcement but additional state and federal partners who are at our disposal should the need arise.

Supervisor of Elections Team Spotlight - Janet Taylor

I'm Janet Taylor, and it's my honor to serve as a Deputy Supervisor of Elections to St. Johns County’s voters. I joined the Elections Team in 2006 and perform many duties within the front office. I enjoy helping voters at the counter who come into the office, processing voter applications, scanning and indexing of documents, mail room activities, and assisting voters when they call with a variety of questions.

During elections, I supervise the Phone Bank and ensure that voters get accurate information. I especially enjoy participating in voter education and outreach events throughout the county and getting to meet new people. I am also affectionately known as the office “Mom” – if you need something, then I’ll make sure you have it or point you in the direction of where you can find it. I truly love my job and coworkers and it is a pleasure to be a part of such a great team.

I was born and raised in St. Augustine and am so proud to call this wonderful city my home. I graduated from St. Augustine High School as my children, and now grandchildren, have done. On any given day you may see me at a nearby lacrosse or softball field watching my grandchildren play. My family is my greatest joy!
