St. Johns County Election News and Updates                     May 2022

Summer is upon us, and so is election season! With the 2022 Primary Election just around the corner, I want to let you know about a few important informational items that will help ensure you are prepared.

As a public servant, I’m dedicated to integrity and transparency. We recently launched a new website designed to make participating in the democratic process easier than ever. It’s informative, easy to navigate, and will ensure voters and those running for office have convenient access to the information they need. If you haven’t seen it - check it out!

The Citizens Guide to Registering and Voting will hit mailboxes in June to help residents prepare for the 2022 elections. The Guide is especially important this year as many changes have occurred since the last election. It's important reading, and worth your time! In addition, your new voter information cards will also be arriving next month and will replace any other voter cards you have received in the past. Be sure to watch for your guide and new card in the mail!

Candidates running for office this year must file their qualifying documents with our office or the Division of Elections in Tallahassee by noon on June 17. Once the noon deadline passes, the ballot will be set for the primary election and our staff will move forward with programming the election. The first vote-by-mail ballots go in the mail on July 9. Curious as to who is running for office? Visit our website for up-to-date election information on the upcoming August 23 Primary Election.

Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter! Each month we will provide timely updates on upcoming elections, important dates and deadlines, and other elections-related topics. Please let us know if there are any specific election-related topics you would like for us to cover and contact our office at 904-823-2238 if you have any questions about upcoming elections, registering to vote, or any election related item.

Sincerely,

Vicky Oakes

St. Johns County Adopts New Voting Precincts

The St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners adopted new voting precincts for St. Johns County residents this month as a result of the 2020 Census and the 2021 Redistricting process. Due to the increase in population from the last census, the number of precincts increased from 48 to 53. The new precincts are effective immediately and will be utilized during the 2022 Primary and General elections. Please visit www.votesjc.gov to view the new precinct map and find out if your precinct number changed. New voting districts, precinct numbers, and polling locations are not yet available using our voter lookup tools. They will be available on the website in mid-June, so please check back to review your information.

New Voting Locations for 2022 Primary and General Elections

The 2020 Census, population growth, and new precinct lines all initiated the need to review and update St. Johns County’s polling places this month. The number of polling places increased from 39 to 41. Of the 39 previous polling places, 33 will remain in use for the 2022 elections and approximately 78 percent of St. Johns County voters will continue to vote on election day at the same location they utilized in the 2020 elections. Please visit www.votesjc.gov to view the new polling locations list and find out if your election day polling location changed.

2022 Citizens Guide to Registering and Voting

The 2022 Citizens Guide to Registering and Voting is on its way to every residential mailbox in St. Johns County to help voters prepare for the the upcoming elections. The publication is especially important this year as many changes have occurred since the last election. The guide provides an update on new voting districts, new precinct lines, and new election day polling locations. It also contains information about registering to vote and other helpful tips to help make participating in the elections easy and convenient. Keep an eye on your mailbox for the guide to arrive in June. If you miss it, the guide will also be available on our website at www.votesjc.gov.

New Voter Information Cards Coming In June

New voter information cards are being mailed to all registered St. Johns County voters in June. Your new card replaces any other cards you have received in the past. When voting in person, you do not need to bring your card. Instead, you must present current and valid photo and signature ID or you must vote a provisional ballot. All voters are advised to review their new voter information cards carefully to determine if their precincts or election day polling places have changed. Watch for your new voter information card in the mail next month!

Supervisor of Elections Team Spotlight - Joe Sarmiento

My name is Joe Sarmiento, and I work as the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Election Services Specialist for your Supervisor of Elections. I was born in Tampa and grew up in Daytona Beach. I enlisted in the Army in 1998 and served as an Armor Crewmember until 2006. Beginning in 2007, I served as a Geospatial Engineer and made maps for the Army until my retirement from Active Duty in 2019, closing out 21 years of military service. Immediately upon retirement, I began working for the St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections. I enjoy public service, and I consider it a privilege to serve the voters of St Johns County! My job includes maintaining a dynamic and accurate map of streets and addresses in the county, ensuring voters’ geographic placement is accurate, integrating address data with the Voter Registration database, updating streets and addresses as growth in the county continues, and maintaining a repository of printable and downloadable maps for our website. In my downtime, I enjoy hanging out with my wife and our two dogs, kayaking, lounging at the beach, listening to music, cooking, and watching sports.
