Bells on the Beach
Wow, Area 12, what a way to come back to in-person events! Ringing, laughing, new friends, renewing old friendships, plus wildlife encounters! People left with their hearts and bellies full. Our clinicians, Stevie Berryman and Barbara Walsh, were fantastic, as always.

On April 17, when it looked like our Vegas conference was not going to happen after all, Sharon Guilliams sent an email to Barb Walsh and a few others, entitled “Wild Idea.” At that time, there was no inkling that the idea would morph into Bells on the Beach, and it would turn out to be so popular. Our original estimate was that maybe 20 or 30 people would attend, but we ended up with over 70 in attendance: 46 ringers, 13 directors, and 12 staff!

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in San Clemente was so gracious to allow us to use their campus. Bell concerts had previously been held there with a couple of choirs in the chancel, but as Bells on the Beach grew, our organizational skills were put to the test. After several measurements, we had a drawing showing that we actually could fit five choirs into the chancel and the area in front of the chancel.

Sharon and the organizing committee worked hard to ensure that everyone felt welcomed and important at Bells on the Beach, while also sharing a bit of the local flare of San Clemente. From naming the tables in the sanctuary for the beaches in San Clemente, to giving the clinicians flip-flops made by local Rainbow Sandals, the village by the sea was an integral part of the conference. Being near the beach also had the advantage that everything was casual.

Ten weeks is not a long time to go from concept to execution, but luckily, one of the showcase choirs from the Vegas event agreed to be in the Showcase Concert and Sharon was able to solicit help from the tremendous amount of talent we have here in the LA Metro area. Many thanks to Linda Krantz, St. John’s Lutheran, Tintabulations, Concordia University, Cyndi Tully & Michele Sharik, and Sam Strasser & Beth Mays for sharing their talents with the participants and audience members in both concerts. Tintab was unexpectedly short a few ringers, so four folks, including clinician Stevie Berryman, stepped up and helped Tintab put on a great performance. In addition to performers, several of the instructors that were scheduled to teach in Vegas agreed to teach in San Clemente, plus we added some Area 12 board members and local instructors. Again, many thanks to our instructors. The handbell world is indeed a special place.
Sharon relayed a story about their adventures on Thursday night after Stevie arrived in San Clemente:
"We did a really fun thing—we actually took some bells to the beach! Stevie was a bit surprised by the cool Pacific water temperature as compared to the Gulf water temperature she’s accustomed to. One of the funniest things was that we started talking to some folks who were curious about the bells, and—after a quick lesson from Stevie—one individual with a percussion background told me that they may want to join my community group! I even got their name and phone number so I can follow up with them."

We kicked off the conference on Friday by loading in the last two sets of bells and having our first massed and division rehearsals. Both Stevie and Barb complimented the ringers on their preparedness, so kudos to all the ringers for working on your music in advance. We had initially hoped to get everyone to the beach for s’mores after the Friday night Showcase concert, but logistics were a bit cumbersome and there really wasn’t sufficient time, so we did the next best thing: s’mores in the church parking lot overlooking the beach!

Saturday was a long but fruitful day, with a variety of classes and rehearsals, capped off by dinner at Sharon’s house. Hospitality was high on the agenda, and we enjoyed a wonderful catered meal from Rocco's, a local Italian restaurant. A really big thank you to Sharon Guilliams and her husband Bobby for opening their home to us for a relaxing evening.

Sunday morning was set aside for church and/or beach time, with the event resuming in the early afternoon. Sunday also featured some “bonus” activities—classes that didn’t end up with enough “votes” after ringers registered for the event, but which we felt were important topics to include and for which our wonderful teachers wanted to share their expertise. After the bonus activities, it was back to work for our final rehearsals. Sunday culminated in a fantastic concert with an audience of over 80 people. The closing piece was our 2020 Composition Contest winner Fervent Freedom by Michael Mazzatenta. We are happy to report that we secured permission to record this piece and it will be available on the Area 12 YouTube channel very soon. As we ceremonially passed our official Area 12 B#5 handbell (yes, a B#5!) from our Chair to our Chair Elect in preparation for our next board to take the reins, a few very sneaky participants prepared a special surprise for us all: after the applause, beach balls were batted out into the audience, which was a fun and fitting closure to Bells on the Beach. Many thanks to those who made this event possible. It takes a village to handle all the coordination, equipment, instruments, and labor required, something many might not recognize until you physically put on an event like this.

As discussed at Bells on the Beach, there are many ways to support Area 12. Our art form is generally under-recognized and often struggles with funding, but supporting it can be as simple as attending Area 12 sponsored or endorsed events, or attending someone else’s concert. Our website lists several ways that you can support Area 12, including via paypal Donate (paypal.com) so please take a look. You are also supporting Area 12 by receiving the Twelfth Tone—this newsletter. We would love it if you would also FOLLOW us on Facebook—that’s where you can get the latest and greatest information.
What’s next? Your Area 12 Board will be considering what our next conference in 2024 will look like and where it will be. Bells on the Beach proved to be a great concept, so if you know of a place (church or other venue) that might be able to hold a “boutique” conference, please send an email with the location and contact information to the Events Director at events.area12@handbellmusicians.org.
A closing note from our Event Chair, Sharon Guilliams: “For those that participated, thank you for allowing me to share San Clemente, the village by the sea, with you. For those that did not participate, feel free to drop me a line if you are in town, but more importantly consider joining us in 2024. Attending a conference is a one of a kind experience.”

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?

Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.

To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
