February 2015
One Resolution Only, Please!

Happy New Year! As always a new year starts with good intentions, and then reality gets in the way, and that tends to happen just days or weeks after the start of the new year. No matter! I pick one thing and work on it for the year, just one. It is manageable, achievable, and after a number of years of doing this sort of thing, I have accomplished a lot. So remember, only one thing! Let the year begin...

In our newsletter today we are looking at our electronic world...devices, online services and what we do with them. In the Spotlight we are looking back at old predictions made for our time now to help us focus our current predictions for the future, and in our Opinion section we try to come up with a way to navigate all of the choices we have in technology today.

PS - please join us for our AGM on May 11th at 5:30 pm. This year we are having it at the Caboto Centre, 1055 Wilkes Avenue. We would love to see you there!

Red River College

Once again the Manitoba Chapter attended the Red River College Student Association Career Fair to promote the CIC and credit management as a career choice for young professionals.

We met with dozens of students and talked about the benefits of our program and opportunities available. We also met with some program directors who showed some interest in our program - very exciting!

Thank you to our tireless volunteers for having worked at the career fair: Kim Misko, Debbie Baines, Karla Cullen and Barb Harris.

Online...Off Life?

As technology exploded over the past 40 years, people at the time new technology predicted how it would impact the future...let's see how close they were to what actually happened:

- Killer bees were going to invade

- We would all have flying cars

- Pills would replace food

- Computers were going to give us 3 or 4-day weekends all the time(!)

- We were all supposed to be in pastel coloured one-piece suits looking at old predictions about our time now is pretty funny, but maybe let's assume that we don't have this prediction-thing down quite right yet.

LinkedIn: Be Heard!
Are you someone who writes letters to the editor? Do you want to participate in discussions and have your opinion heard?

Recently the CIC has opened up LinkedIn groups across Canada so members can discuss issues important to them and to the credit profession. You have a voice, and now you have a forum to be heard.

A Social Media Moment

89% of adults from 18 to 29 are active on social media
43% of adults 65 & older are as well

National offers webinars from time to time, and you can always check their webinar schedule for current and archived webinars.

Your Seminar Chair is Debbie Baines, CCP

The Manitoba Chapter has faired well this year, holding CCP membership steady, and growing our student numbers. Overall we are down by three, though that is because the number of affiliates has gone down by three.

Please click here to see the report.

Your Membership Chair is Kim Misko, CCP

We are always looking for great ideas for getting together with Chapter members. If you have a thought why not share it? Drop me an email by clicking on my name!

Your Social Chair is Karla Cullen, CCP

National continues to focus on how they will deliver course content going forward. National has been working with local institutions in Winnipeg to see is they will be able to conduct training and if the courses they offer would be able to transfer to the CCP program.

Course development and transfers between institutions are difficult to work out, and though the expectation is that these will be finalized by September 2015, National is not yet ready to release all of the details while negotiations continue.

Despite this ongoing effort, students need not be concerned about their future courses. Your education is in good hands!

Your National Director is Barb Harris, CCP

Our financial results to the end of January are not materially different than those of December. We continue to run with a small surplus, and expect to end the year that way as well. All is well!

We would like to thank our sponsors, Pinnacle, D&B, National Leasing & TransUnion for their generous sponsorship of our Chapter.

You can always see our past audited financial statements on our website under Board and Governance.

Your Treasurer is Peter Smith, CA, CCP

For the last two years I have been hammering away at two articles for this newsletter. One on the use of social media, and another on online services and mobility. But I have not been able to make either work (and with the speed of technological change, I have had to start over a couple of times)!

I have three issues I am trying to write about:

  • Why do I have so many online services?
  • Do I really have that much to say anyway?
  • What do I wish I knew back then?
