Provincial Election Called Early
As announced on January 29th, an early provincial election will take place on February 27, 2025.
FOCA has created a "key priorities" overview and a template letter you can use to ask local candidates about provincial priorities that impact waterfront Ontario communities. Please use and share these resources! Get details about designating your vote riding, FOCA's key priorities list, a link to the voter Register of Elections Ontario (to confirm, update, or add your information in order to receive a mailed Voter Information Card with details on when, where and how to vote), and other important links on FOCA's webpage: https://foca.on.ca/provincial-elections/
Important: You only get one vote in the provincial election, even if you have residences in more than one electoral district. If you do have two residences in Ontario, statistically speaking your vote may be "worth" more at your waterfront property where there are fewer voters. FOCA encourages you to vote where you are entitled to, and where you feel your voice is strongest on the issues that matter to waterfront Ontario. Consult our website (link above) for details.

Ice Cover & Safety
As recently as January 18th the Great Lakes were only at half their average ice coverage level. However, the recent cold snap has popped the ice level up much closer to the historic average for late January. Consult the graphs and daily ice maps of the NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory for more information (source of the image at the side).
FOCA reminds everyone that no ice is 100% safe. Get important ice safety tips on our webpage: https://foca.on.ca/ice/#fall

Extreme Cold & Home Insurance
In the midst of the deep freeze earlier this January, the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) published a new blog on the topic: Does my insurance cover damage caused by extreme cold? While the article suggests many policies will cover typical damage due to extreme cold, FOCA reminds our members to always contact your insurance professional to review the specifics of how your policy would respond in particular situations. It's best to know what you are covered for.

Passing the Torch: Cottage Succession Corner | |
Ask the Expert
We are launching a new Elert feature: Passing the Torch - your cottage succession questions answered by lawyer Peter Lillico, the expert speaker in FOCA's ongoing Cottage Succession Seminar Series.
Our first question comes from Bob C:
"We purchased the cottage in 2009 and it became our principle residence in 2015. If we sell it in 2025, how do we get the value in 2015 to calculate the capital gains between 2009 and 2015?”
Members can login with their Username on FOCA's webpage for the answer from Peter: https://foca.on.ca/cottage-succession/

Clean + Drain + Dry
Associations: are you already thinking about content for your Spring 2025 newsletter? Remind your members about the importance of preventing aquatic invasive species. Feel free to use the words below!
If you are a boater, you have an important role to play in preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. In Ontario, it's the law: you must clean, drain and dry your boat before moving it between lakes or rivers. This helps prevent the spread of invasive species like Zebra mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil, spiny water flea, and many more. Learn how and then spread the word: https://foca.on.ca/invasive-species/

Possible New Nuclear Power Plant(s)
Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator forecasts electricity demand in the province could increase by 75% by 2050. Now, CBC News reports the conversation is underway in the Port Hope area, with the municipality and local First Nations. Get a link to this news and related information: https://foca.on.ca/nuclear/

Lake Erie Restoration Goals & Actions
FOCA attended a recent information session about the Department of Fisheries and Oceans' (DFO) Lake Erie restoration goals and actions. A new Restoration Action Dashboard (RAD) has been introduced for the Lake Erie watershed (source of the image at the side). This geospatial tool highlights strategic actions underway that are focused on fish and fish habitat restoration. Users can explore the map through icons representing various restoration themes, each linked to specific goals and actions. RAD aims to enhance evidence-based restoration efforts, aligning with DFO’s priorities and considering current land use. FOCA will continue to monitor the project's progress, on behalf of our members in the region.

For the Birds: Choosing Feeders and Seed
The folks at Birds Canada have published a blog about how to choose the right feeder for your backyard birds. Do you want to attract hummingbirds or cardinals? Finches or chickadees? Choose your feeder type and seed accordingly! In addition to the great tips in the blog, FOCA adds the following caveat: if you are located in bear country, your bird feeder could attract a much larger visitor, so beware. Enjoy the blog and consult the bear safety tips here.
