Today in LGBTQ History
-
March 15, 1983: A West Virginia kindergarten teacher, Linda Conway, is forced to resign from her job after parents complain that she looks like a lesbian. She files a $1 million lawsuit against the school board. However, three years later the State Supreme Court confirms the school board's right to dismiss her because of her appearance.

ELEVATE OUR LGBTQ YOUTH PROGRAM
|
Here in Boulder County we like to believe that we do a little better for our youth than in other parts of the state or country. I'm not sure how to break this to you but we don't.
In the most recent survey of high school youth one third of lesbian, gay, bisexual and questioning students and almost half of transgender youth report being bullied (LGBTQ). From bullying, to feeling like teachers don't care about their success, to drug use, to suicide rates our LGBTQ youth are reporting heartbreaking numbers related to questions about their daily life (Source 1, Source 2).
Based upon these horrific numbers and the current climate a generous individual has stepped forward to offer a $15,000 challenge grant for our Youth Program. This money comes from someone who knows we're having a positive impact on your youth but that our program needs to expand to address emerging needs.
Our direct service programs for youth include multiple social-support groups, tutoring, homeless and foster outreach, sober-social activities including an annual dance, a film project and employment of youth interns.
In these uncertain times our youth are more at risk than ever before. It is likely that a direct anti-LGBT executive order is still to come and already transgender youth are being targeted. As the government tries to chip away at equality we need to stand up for our LGBTQ youth.
It's easy to give and every gift matters. You can make a one-time or a recurring gift, and gifts of $1000 or more can be spread over two years.
If you sat in my desk for a day you'd know how badly your support is needed. Call me if you would like additional information and I will gladly provide.
With Gratitude and Hope for a Better Future,
Mardi Moore

Freedom to Marry Screening at Dairy Center for the Arts
|
One of the most surprising things about the same sex marriage movement is that, actually, it was carefully planned and orchestrated over decades. THE FREEDOM TO MARRY is an intimate and epic documentary which goes behind-the-scenes to reveal the inner workings and key players of this historic civil rights battle.
This is a riveting ride alongside Evan Wolfson, the man known as architect of the movement, civil rights attorney Mary Bonauto, and their key colleagues as they wage their climactic battle before the United States Supreme Court, providing fresh perspective on the movement's history along the way. This is a primer for social change, and an inspirational tale of how people can actually make a difference.
