EARTH DAY: APRIL 22, 2026

Since its start in 1970, Earth Day has become a global day of activism and learning about environmental topics related to protection of the Earth, its natural resources, and species. Climate change, global warming, deforestation, air pollution, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity are just a few of the many environmental issues that threaten the health of our planet. Learning about the science behind these issues is a first step to creating strategies and solutions for conserving energy and natural resources, reusing and recycling materials, protecting habitats and ecosystems, developing safer chemical processes, and slowing global warming.

The Mott Million Dollar Challenge is proud to announce that 1,500 submissions have been selected as first-round winners, each receiving a $250 award.

More than 5,300 K-12 students from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. submitted to the Mott Million Dollar Challenge and stepped up to pitch ideas for new businesses and social solutions. Arizona had 5 winners in round 1!

Together, these ideas reflect the creativity, leadership and bold thinking young people bring when given the opportunity to explore, create and lead. Thousands of educators helped students brainstorm, refine and share their ideas, building skills that extend far beyond the competition.

Sciencing Out: Making Science Accessible and Engaging

For centuries, women all around the world have educated the public about science, often stirring up interest, curiosity—and even occasionally uprisings. As science communicators, these women have bridged the gap between researchers, mathematicians, and engineers, making information that would be otherwise inaccessible to the public understandable.

In the premiere episode of “Sciencing Out,” host Reyhaneh Maktoufi introduces you to Hypatia of Alexandria, a mathematician from 1,650 years ago, and modern-day ecologist Dr. Nalini Nadkarni.
