The Eagle Eye with Dr. Weindorf

As Fall returns, our campuses are once again a buzz with the energy of students connecting with faces new and old. While students are busy sharing stories of summer and gearing up for the semester that lies ahead, the Office of Research and Economic Development is hard at work forging connections across campus and beyond.

As our world becomes more specialized and siloed, it’s important to remember that we can learn and accomplish more together than alone. To that end, I am excited to announce our first annual State of the Research Enterprise Address. This is a chance for me and the other leaders in ORED to tell faculty across the entire university about where we are and where we’re headed. It will also serve as an opportunity for us to tell you about the resources and support we offer to researchers.

Speaking of resources and support, I am thrilled that Dr. Hui Jin (COE) will serve as our newest faculty fellow. Dr. Jin’s expertise in artificial intelligence will be essential as our office and the faculty navigate today’s rapidly evolving research landscape.

In addition, we are excited to spearhead Georgia Southern’s official faculty club. The club will give faculty from different colleges and departments regular opportunities to meet, share perspectives, and catch up on work and life.

Another project I’m eager to share is our collaboration with the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art. Starting this semester, our office will be connecting graphic design students with research faculty who require help with graphical abstracts and data representations. This is truly an example of where two heads are better than one, and I can’t think of a better endeavor to convey the message that we all can contribute to research, no matter our field or discipline.

In closing, I want to say how proud I am of our office and the entire university for creating connections in the classroom and community. The benefits are great, but the work is not always easy, and Eagle Nation continues to boldly advance.

The great Albert Einstein once said, “Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will take you everywhere.” To me, this doesn’t minimize the importance of logic; it just shows how important it is to pair it with an awareness and appreciation of what else is around you.

Let’s have a great semester and continue to use our logic and imagination together to soar to new heights!

Research Integrity Info - Eagle Tips Challenge

The Office of Research and Economic Development, in partnership with the Office of Research Integrity, is launching a new monthly feature highlighting research integrity. Each month, you’ll get important information—and the chance to test your knowledge in the Eagle Tips Challenge. Answer correctly for a chance to win prizes!

This month’s focus: Required Research Training

All researchers must complete two training modules through the CITI Program to apply for external or internal funding, or serve as paid personnel on grant projects:

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR): One-time training (2–4 hours) that covers ethical and professional issues in research. Required before submitting funding applications or working on federal grants.

Research Security & Export Control: One-hour course required annually before submitting federal proposals.

Both are available through your my.georgiasouthern portal under the Research Resources tile.

Georgia Southern secures prestigious National Science Foundation Grant for innovative STEM research, education and outreach

Georgia Southern University’s Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing and College of Education are teaming up to bring the latest innovative research on renewable energy to STEM educators and their classrooms across Georgia.

That’s all thanks to a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to establish the Engaging Educators in Renewable Energy (ENERGY) program. The funds will be used to develop a three-year-long initiative that will bring Valentin Soloiu, Ph.D.’s energy research into high school and technical college classrooms.

Four Georgia Southern faculty members publish books taking research beyond the library

Four Georgia Southern University professors are using their original research to bring new light to historic topics.

Their recently published books span topics from European history to an American novelist to a reexamination of Sherman’s March through Georgia. Through research that takes a deep dive into their fields of study, they bring a more complete understanding of their topics to a broad audience.
