Eagle Eye with Dr. Weindorf

As the Spring semester is now in full swing, I want to take a moment to highlight some numbers that should make us all proud of where we’ve been and excited about where we are going.

I'm happy to report that our NSF HERD (Higher Education Research & Development) numbers for FY ‘24 show record-breaking progress in total and federal research expenditures, with institutional records of $46 million and $4 million, respectively. This is a direct reflection of the hard work of our faculty, students, and staff, and I couldn’t be more proud to stand with you all as we continue to grow and expand our research enterprise, making positive impacts in our communities and beyond.

On the topic of progress and growth, I’m also excited to announce that we have several large grants currently underway in public health, clinical sciences, and education. Additionally, we’ve welcomed Dr. Janny Crespo-Grow as our new Director of Research Security and Export Controls. Her experience and expertise will enhance an already spectacular research integrity team and ensure that we comply with all relevant rules and regulations as our faculty pursue the biggest, most complex grants.

Recently, the winds of change have swirled around research in higher education, bringing with it some difficulty and uncertainty. Despite this, we have collectively remained resilient and nimble. Together, we have shown what it means to possess a true blue spirit. Rest assured that the Office of Research and Economic Development is here to support you and assuage any concerns of a rapidly changing funding landscape in higher education. Jointly, let us work to ensure 2025 is Georgia Southern’s finest year yet, with a brilliant future ahead.
