Eagle Eye with Dr. Weindorf

As we kick off another year and prepare to start a new semester, The Office of Research and Economic Development is happy to report that Georgia Southern’s research enterprise is soaring into 2025!

I recently reviewed our statistics for 2024, and the data speaks volumes. We broke institutional records for peer-reviewed research papers and Q1 journal publications. Our total scholarly output increased by 10% from 2023, breaking another school record. Additionally, several of our colleges are making significant strides in scholarly output. Chief among them are the College of Education, the Parker College of Business, and the College of Science and Mathematics.

Of course, these numbers represent growth and progress toward our goal of becoming an R1 institution. Still, more importantly, they represent the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff and their unwavering commitment to growing ourselves while growing others.

Georgia Southern researchers break new ground in earthquake prediction

Cemil Yavas knows firsthand the devastation that earthquakes can bring to communities, which led him to research how to predict the phenomenon for many years.

“My interest in earthquake prediction research stems from a deeply personal experience,” Yavas said. “I was in Istanbul during the devastating Aug. 17, 1999, earthquake, a disaster that claimed nearly 18,000 lives and left hundreds of thousands homeless. Among those affected were some of my closest friends. The chaos that followed—limited resources, strained rescue efforts, and the haunting sound of people trapped beneath rubble—left a lasting impression on me.”

Cemil Yavas, collaborating with Yiming Ji, Ph.D., Lei Chen, Ph.D., and Christopher Kadlec, Ph.D., faculty and researchers in the Department of Information Technology at the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing, has used his personal motivation to build upon previous research and enhance earthquake prediction models.

Georgia Southern faculty published in New England Journal of Medicine for Opioid Crisis Research

Andrew Kolodny, M.D. of Brandeis University, and Robert Bohler, Ph.D. of Georgia Southern University, were recently featured in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Their perspective entitled, Screened Out—How a Survey Change Sheds Light on Iatrogenic Opioid Use Disorder, published in November of last year, examines an oversight in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) concerning iatrogenic, or treatment-induced, opioid addiction. The two have decades of experience in the field of addiction and first started collaborating while Bohler was a student at Brandeis, earning his Ph.D. in social policy.

Kolodny and Bohler (Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health) have studied the opioid crisis since the mid-1990s. They were consultants for some of the early litigation against pharmaceutical companies. Some of that litigation was successful, improving the public’s understanding of the industry's role in causing the crisis. Even so, the two remained perplexed by a statistical incongruity that indicated a larger problem.

Fullbright Scholar Program Now Accepting Applications for the 26-27 Scholar-in-Residence Program

The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program is accepting applications for U.S. institutions to host an international scholar for a semester or the full 2026-27 academic year.

S-I-Rs expose students—some of whom may not be able to go abroad—to international perspectives and experiences that expand their global awareness. They share their expertise in classrooms, campus events, and with local community groups.

Fulbright provides J-visa sponsorship, travel, and living stipends. S-I-Rs can be utilized for the following internationalization efforts:

  • Teaching
  • Curriculum development
  • Developing exchange partnerships
  • Community engagement
