The Eagle Eye with Dr. Weindorf

As we begin 2026, I want to be very clear about both the opportunity before us and the confidence I have in this community. This is a consequential year for Georgia Southern. It is the final year Carnegie will consider us for the upcoming reclassification cycle, and the decisions we make, both collectively and individually, will shape our research trajectory for years to come.

There is no question that the external environment has been challenging. Federal uncertainty, shifting priorities, and longer review timelines have affected institutions across the country. We are not alone in feeling that pressure. But moments like this are precisely when strong research universities distinguish themselves not by retreating, but by moving forward with purpose.

That is exactly what we have done. Over the past year, when it seemed doors were closing, we opened new ones. We strengthened our scholarly output, expanded international collaborations, and set institutional records in peer-reviewed publications. Under some of the toughest conditions we have faced, you ensured that Soar Beyond remained a living, breathing mandate, not just a slogan.

As we move through 2026 and stand on the threshold of R1, that momentum must continue, not only through publications but through an increased focus on grantsmanship.

Achieving R1 is not about chasing dollar figures or a label. It is about fueling discovery, supporting our students, and building the research infrastructure necessary for long-term impact. While recent funding trends have softened, I believe deeply in our ability to reverse that trajectory. The talent, creativity, and collaborative strength of this faculty are undeniable.

I encourage each of you to think intentionally about how your work aligns with external funding opportunities. Consider resubmissions. Consider new partnerships. Our Office stands ready to support you at every step and remains committed to removing barriers wherever possible.

This is our moment. We have planned for it. We have prepared for it. Now we execute together with focus, resolve, and optimism. Fortune still favors the bold, and I am confident our best work lies ahead.

Eagle Nation Leads the Way in V2X Research

Seungmo Kim, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing, will lead the Vehicle-to-Everything Pooled Fund Study (V2XPFS), a five-year, $3.125 million research consortium bringing together 18 U.S. states and Transport Canada (21 DOT members), with additional states expected to join.

Building on the U.S. Department of Transportation’s connected vehicle initiative, the program will develop, test, and share advanced vehicle-to-everything (V2X) applications with transportation agencies and automakers worldwide.

V2X enables vehicles to communicate with other cars, infrastructure, pedestrians, and the cloud—supporting safer roads, reduced congestion, improved mobility, and future autonomous systems.

As the lead institution for this nationwide initiative, Georgia Southern University gains national visibility in transportation research while advancing its responsibilities as a research leader.

“This award positions Georgia Southern at the forefront of connected transportation innovation and aligns strongly with our R1 aspirations,” said Masoud Davari, Ph.D., interim associate dean of research for the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing.

January Eagle Tip Challenge

Presented by the Office of Research Integrity

Lab Safety Awareness Week is a national initiative promoting safe practices in academic teaching and research laboratories. This year, Georgia Southern is emphasizing core lab safety fundamentals, beginning with chemical inventories.

We are encouraging labs across Georgia Southern to participate in at least one safety-related activity this week, whether that means reviewing inventories, improving storage methods, or simply spreading the word about lab safety.

Test your lab safety knowledge below for a chance to win a prize, and congratulations to last month's winner - Jonathan Gulledge!
