West End Redevelopment Advisory Committee Survey Update
Mayor Melnick wishes to thank everyone who provided feedback in the online survey. We received 289 responses, and all 28 respondents who indicated interest will be serving on the Mayor's Advisory Committee. The mayor gleaned valuable insights and ideas from the community during this process. Here are the top 5 takeaways from the survey results:

Opportunities
  • Expanding bike and walking paths to connect the West End to The Village
  • Incentives for property improvements such as signage, paint, and landscaping
  • Business attraction that will maintain and enhance the character of the West End

Challenges
  • Insufficient parking near Boulder Bay
  • Traffic flow and pedestrian safety

Feedback from the survey will be utilized by the committee to identify both short-term goals that can make immediate impacts as well as longer-term ideas. The Mayor plans to bring the committee’s ideas back the City Council and the community for discussion in the near future.

City Employee Spotlight
We welcome our new Public Works Supervisor, Ryan Dorsett
The City of Big Bear Lake would like to welcome our new Public Works Supervisor, Ryan Dorsett. Ryan joined the City last November after a long career with Caltrans District 8, where he started as an intern at the age of 18 and worked his way up to Maintenance Supervisor of the Fawnskin Maintenance Station. Ryan relocated from San Bernardino to the mountains in 2016, and became a Paid Call Firefighter with the Arrowbear Lake Fire Department while still working for Caltrans. He was promoted to Fire Apparatus Engineer in 2020, and Fire Captain in 2023. His leadership and interagency coordination skills were integral during several major disasters and events, including the Running Springs Snowstorm (2016), Valley Fire Response at Forest Falls (2018), Big Bear Snowstorm (2019), El Dorado Fire at Angelus Oaks (2020), and the blizzard known as "Snowmageddon" (2023), where his teams from Caltrans supported law enforcement and fire personnel by closing roadways and keeping scenes secure.

Ryan holds a Wastewater Collections Certificate from San Bernardino Valley College, and has completed numerous State-sponsored educational programs including Managerial Leadership Academy and Supervisory Training Program in Sacramento. He is well-versed in regulatory compliance with state water and air resources boards, as well as human and labor relations.

Ryan's vast knowledge and professional experience uniquely qualifies him to serve the community of Big Bear Lake as Public Works Supervisor. In this role, Ryan supports the Public Works Manager, and is responsible for planning, scheduling, and supervising the Public Works Staff who perform construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of streets, parks, and storm drains, ensuring safe work practices, work quality, and accuracy. In addition, Ryan inspects the City’s wastewater collection system, pumps and lift stations and ensures compliance with     regulatory requirements. Ryan is also responsible for overseeing snow removal activities and assisting in the City’s related responses to emergency incidents.

When he's not working, Ryan enjoys spending time with his fiancée, going out to eat at various Big Bear Valley eateries, and playing with his three energetic Australian Cattle Dogs.
