Mayor Melnick to Establish
West End Redevelopment Advisory Committee
|
|
The City of Big Bear Lake is committed to providing exceptional service to the community, and improving the quality of life for all residents, visitors, and businesses. The former Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) was established by the City Council to help address that objective, looking at ways that the City can focus its efforts to support economic vitality for the community. The EDAC’s efforts produced the newly implemented beautification campaign, Beautify Big Bear Lake, which focuses on property maintenance needs along Big Bear Boulevard and the Moonridge Corridor. Mayor Perri Melnick and Mayor Pro Tem Segovia want to expand on that initiative, and are seeking community participation in the forthcoming West End Redevelopment Advisory Committee.
Mayor Melnick offered some additional context to the newly proposed committee:
“I commend the hard work and dedication of the EDAC, I believe those efforts are a great start toward realizing the vision of a safe, beautiful and economically diverse community – but I believe we can do even more in the pursuit of that goal. I am proposing the formation of the West End Redevelopment Advisory Committee, which will focus on addressing the issues facing the west end of the City. I want to identify solutions to problems like blight and deferred maintenance, help to solve traffic and safety issues, provide support to existing businesses, and look at zoning, land use, and business development opportunities. For the majority of residents and visitors, the west end of the City is the first thing they see as they enter our community, and that first impression should be representative of the beauty of Big Bear Lake. This Advisory Committee will help to build on the City’s existing efforts to promote safety, bring beauty back to areas that have been neglected, and improve the quality of life for everyone.”
The Beautify Big Bear Lake campaign and the West End Redevelopment Advisory Committee are directly aligned with the role of the City’s new Economic Development Manager, Kelly Tinker, whose responsibilities will include the administration of both initiatives. Through community engagement efforts and ongoing communication to share program information and access to available resources, Mr. Tinker will provide business and property owners with the support needed to bring lasting, meaningful improvements to our community.
The West End Redevelopment Advisory Committee will focus on a defined area, providing support to residents and businesses located between the western city limits and Red Ant Hill (see image below). The committee will work to identify both short-term goals that can make immediate impacts, and long-term objectives that will ensure ongoing emphasis and continued investment of resources. Participation in the Advisory Committee will be limited to residents and business owners located within the defined West End area. Those located within the West End who are interested in serving on the Advisory Committee can indicate their interest when completing the accompanying survey. Community members that are not located within the defined West End area can still participate in the survey process, and can subscribe to receive all related program updates and information.

We welcome our new Neighborhood Preservation Officer, Jessika Leverich
|
|
The City of Big Bear Lake would like to welcome our new Neighborhood Preservation Officer, Jessika Leverich. Jessika joins the City after relocating from San Diego, where she spent the last five years focusing on specializing in behavioral health and rehabilitation for at-risk youth and people suffering from mental health crises and chemical dependency.
As a member of the Neighborhood Preservation Team, Jessika serves our community with compassion to promote safe and clean neighborhoods, preserve property values, support economic vitality through education and compliance, and maintain a good quality of life for our residents. When asked why she wanted to become a Neighborhood Preservation Officer for the City, Jessika said, "I want to foster positive working relationships with members of the community, professional agencies, as well as tourists, allowing constructive conversations and education regarding the municipal code and vacation-rental related matters. Community engagement is something that is very important to me and a large reason for relocating to Big Bear."
Jessika holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology from San Diego State University, and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Social Work with a certificate in Criminal Sentencing and Sentencing Advocacy from Arizona State University. In her spare time, Jessika enjoys reading, hiking with her dog, fishing, and taking road trips to picturesque destinations where she can immerse herself in nature. "I am a huge animal lover and really enjoy getting to experience all of the wildlife here in Big Bear Lake. I look forward to experiencing various seasons and being a part of such a warm and welcoming community," said Leverich.
