Happy June and welcome to Summer Vacation for the Kids! Also known as just another day at work for Tennessee’s hard working truckers!
All joking aside, and before we focus on June and summer, I want to take a minute and look back to Memorial Day Weekend. Originating around 1868 as Decoration Day and finally becoming what we know as Memorial Day on the last Monday of May in 1970, Memorial Day is a time to celebrate and remember those brave Americans who served, and all too often died in the Armed Services to preserve our democracy. My personal mission is something I would encourage all of you to strive for and make Memorial Day more than just a holiday weekend, especially for many of our drivers and employees who served. Perhaps keeping Wreaths Across America https://trucking.wreathsacrossamerica.org/volunteer in mind would be a good way to engage and honor your employees.
Cold weather and wreaths aside, it’s summer, beach time and vacation time for many of us. That said, your association is still as hard working as ever. Donna and the staff had an absolutely hectic May with many events spread across the state from West to East Tennessee and every point in between. And while the associations event schedule begins to outwardly look like it is slowing down in June, the staff are still hard at work with Road Team events, NATMI classes, convention planning ( Yes, convention registration is open!), and the thousand and one other things they have to do.
Until next month, stay hydrated, stay cool, stay safe and keep on Trucking!

Successful commercial motor vehicle drivers must do all they can to avoid accidents, roadside breakdowns, and lost road time due to poor vehicle conditions. Conducting vehicle inspections helps drivers keep their vehicles in good working order. Routine vehicle inspections enable drivers to discover unsafe conditions before they cause accidents or crashes, find mechanical problems before they lead to costly breakdowns on the road, prevent being placed out of service during a roadside inspection, and avoid violations and fines that effect business and profits.
Good companies use an inspection form or have designed one to help drivers conduct proper pre-trip, on-the-road, and post-trip inspections on standard CMVs.
Drivers need to be able to:
Conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection. FMCSR Sec. 392.7 and 396.13 are the procedures a driver should take before taking a vehicle on the road to identify problems that could cause a breakdown or crash.
1. Engine Compartment & Front Axle Components
2. In-Cab Inspection
3. Lights
4. Walk-Around
5. Brake System Check
Explain when an on the road inspection needs to be done and how to complete one.
FMCSR Sec. 392.9 outlines steps that can be done while driving (check of dashboard gauges) and whenever stopped (check of tires, wheels, rims, brakes, lights, electrical and air connections to trailer, trailer coupling devices, and securing cargo.
1. When to Perform
2. How to Perform
Complete a proper post-trip inspection. FMCSR Sec. 396.11 tells a driver what is performed at day's end and includes filling out a driver vehicle inspection report (DVIR) and listing any problems discovered.
1. Procedures
2. DVIR
J.J. Keller has a form along with a training video that is designed to help drivers perform these duties. Check out the links for more details:
