International Ice Patrol in Elizabeth City
In a normal year, Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City flies International Ice Patrol missions out of Newfoundland, Canada from February to July because it provides optimal distance to the mission area and greatly increases the time on station vs. stationing out of the Northeastern US. Due to COVID, in mid-March, an Air Station Elizabeth City crew forward deployed to St. Johns for the first time in over a year (last year most missions were flown out of Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, 1700 miles further from the operation area). In an attempt to explain what the “International Ice Patrol (IIP)” is, I located a 2018 post from the Coast Guard 5th District:
“In the 106 years since the sinking of the Titanic prompted the International Ice Patrol’s implementation, not a single vessel heeding an iceberg warning issued by the service has collided with an iceberg.
During a typical ice season, extending from February through August, and sometimes into September, the Coast Guard’s Ice Patrol routinely flies to St. John’s, Newfoundland, on HC-130J Super Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City to search for icebergs. Twice a month for nine days at a time, a typical air crew consists of eight members from Air Station Elizabeth City, who welcome aboard five ice observers based out of New London, Connecticut. The team conducts aerial reconnaissance missions over the North Atlantic Ocean, searching for iceberg threats to the transatlantic shipping lanes.
As the shortest distance between Europe and North America is riddled with icebergs for much of ice season, maritime transportation companies depend upon reports published by the IIP to determine the safest, most economical routes for maritime commerce between the continents. If weather provides the right conditions, the crew takes off from St. John’s and patrols about 7-9 hours at an altitude usually between 500 and 2,000 feet. They scan roughly 30,000 square nautical miles in an average flight. The crew depends on the aircraft’s 360 degree sea search radar, and verifies what the technology finds with human observers looking out the aircraft’s windows.”
Also - over 10,000 participants have registered for the Coast Guard Half-Marathon and 5K!!! But there are only about 900 spots left for the two races, so sign up quick! I completed my half-marathon and survived but am looking forward to running in person next year. If you are interested, more details of this event can be found at CoastGuardRun.com or by contacting the Visit Elizabeth City staff.

Elizabeth City Habitat For Humanity
|

On March 20, Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity celebrated Mrs. Debra Barcliff’s accomplishment of paying off her mortgage by burning her mortgage note. The Barcliff’s house was the first house built by Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity and the third to be paid off by homeowners. Current board members were joined at Taylor Mueller Realty by Gwen Bell, one of the members of the original board of directors.
Mrs. Barcliff and her husband Roosevelt purchased from EC Habitat for Humanity in April 1996. At the time they purchased the $39,000 house for their family of six, Mr. Barcliff worked as a custodian at the Extension Office. He later became a sergeant at the Pasquotank Correctional institution. Mrs. Barcliff had just started a long-term substitute job at Sheep-Harney Elementary School when they purchased the house. She went on to teach fourth and fifth grades at Sheep-Harney.
Mr. Barcliff died in 2011 and several years later Mrs. Barcliff herself had health issues that resulted in her being placed on life support. During these periods of health issues, the board of directors put her mortgage in forebearance and she resumed payments when her health improved.
Mrs. Barcliff also has a connection to our most recent partner family headed by Mirracle Burnham who was in one of her fifth grade classes.
“We are very happy to celebrate this event with Mrs. Barcliff,” said Erica Ramjohn, President of Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity. “This is a great milestone for her and our affiliate.”
In addition to Bell, founding board members of EC Habitat for Humanity were Dr. Douglas E. Murray, Sonya Hibbard, Gladys H. Williams, Stanley W. Easty, and John Kinsey.
Habitat for Humanity partner families must qualify to purchase the house and agree to perform between 300 and 500 sweat equity hours on the construction of the house. Ms. Burnham has completed nearly 250 hours so far on her house on 5th Street. Our homeowners pay a zero interest loan, taxes and insurance. Homeowner principal payments are used for new construction projects.
Construction prices have increased significantly since 1996. We are looking for donors to help defray the costs of the driveway, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, doors, bathroom accessories, closet shelving, baseboards, and flooring, among other items. If you would like to contribute to our building fund, contact Norma James at Taylor Mueller Realty, 252-331-2233.
